Bernard,

As an owner of two Land Rovers I totally agree, they are the Microsoft of the car world, but still what makes us keep buying them.

Damian

What makes us buy them is the residual value.

= Not a lot.

True, they give us a lot of car for little money, but there are good reasons for the low secondhand values.

There is no Champagne at Lemonade money.

Bernard,

I'll bet that you will not be suffering backfiring in the first year after conversion either....

We stopped fitting closed and open loop single mixer systems to older RR's and Disco's a while back because of the problems we get blamed for some months down the line.

This has little (if anything) to do with the LPG conversion and an awful lot to do with an ignition system designed in USA (Buick) back in the 1940's, then re-hashed (read made worse) by Rover. (For those recently joining us, an EFi engine that misfires on petrol will show no obvious effect, but a single point mixer LPG system can show the fault up very graphically as backfiring).

Don't misunderstand, I think that Land Rover were world beaters, giving us the LR concept in 1948 and later the Range Rover, well ahead of current 4x4 fashion. Sadly, like most UK manufacturers, they had the talent and innovation but lost the plot later, leaving it open to others to pick up and refine their hard work.

The product of this is your Japanese Landcruiser and every other Land/Range Rover derivative.

Now Land Rover are part of the Ford mush I am not unsure if even that spectacular and inspired spirit still thrives.

It is sad, but I suppose it should not only be Motorcycles, Aviation, Shipbuilding, Engineering, Machine Tool manufacturing, Electronics, Computer Technology, Clock and Watchmaking Etc. Etc. that is taken up, improved and marketed by the rest of the world.

Why not go the whole hog?

Let's just make Burgers......

I did the same as Bernard nearly 4 years ago, exchanged the RR for a Toyota Landcuiser. Did a DIY lpg conversion and have not had a spot of trouble since, performance is equal that of petrol and engine oil drained out looks just like the new oil being put in.
As regards overall quality it is sad to say that the Toyota wins hands down, no rust and only replaced tyres and brake shoes.

Bernard,

I have no problem with single point mixers and use many - In fact, we do not advise the fitting of SGi to the Jaguar XJ40 and X300 range because we get such good results with our own (£500 less expensive) single point installation.

I completely agree with you, and think that the correct mixer properly fed and installed is a first class way to get fuel into an engine. In that way we use exactly the same system for a 6 cyl Jeep (single point and closed loop) because the engine and ignition is well made enough to use it.

My problem (I guess it depends how you read me or whether I have been unclear)is with the dear old Rover (Buick) V8 and single point mixers. So many odd and spurious sparks are thrown around, resulting in backfiring.

Thus my perspective is slightly different - I think that the RV8 is unsuitable for single point,
not that single point is unsuitable for the RV8.
If the ignition system were just a little better made and designed this would not be the case.

Back to the Toyota and reliable ignition.

I can hear Sleigh bells in the distance....

Nope, its my Cat.

Spot on Bernard.

I too cannot fathom this description.

'Injection' deals with something is being forcefully introduced at greater pressure than the target surroundings, i.e a Hypodermic injection.

A single point mixer of any kind (even those twiddly taper cone thingys) is NOT an injector.

I also have problems with the term 'Closed loop' when used to describe a single mixer system with a Lambda feedback controller and stepper. It suggests that no other system is closed, true in the case of open loop systems but most certainly not when applied to an SGi system. It should be correctly called a 'Closed Loop Single Mixer' system.

Pedantic? Maybe...

...But my background makes clear demands of me to be accurate with words, hence 'twiddly taper cone thingys'!

Trigger - Look forward to a an 'Exploder' bonnet with a non standard power bulge in the near future. To avoid, get the kit taken off and have SGi fitted.

Bernard -

You'd find this website interesting, even if it only serves to show how many problems there are with standard Series 2 RR's Etc.......

http://www.rpiv8.com/sitemap.htm
