OBD OBDII etc

My 1996 lexus LS400 doesnt have OBDII, it has this connector port



Id like to buy something like a scangauge to monitor mpg and also use an obdII reader to check error codes etc

If I bought an obdII adapter such as this:


would it be sufficient, or do these adapters just not work with modern readers and scangauge devices?

Should do, assuming your Lexus gives out something an OBD reader can understand. All it is is an adapter cable.

I doubt a 96 Lexus is obd compliant. Generally you just earth a pin out and it blink codes any problems. If its not k line or can bus then I very much doubt it will interface with an obd reader. Some more vehicle specific readers will give you info about abs, body, chassis and engine info. All those pins relate to the srs and abs system, you should also have a rectagualr plug under the bonnet. That has oxygen sensors and ign and more engine related stuff. It may well have a k line, but wether or not you can get an obd reader to give you a live data stream is anyones guess. But i doubt it with that adaptor cable.

yeah its the type where you bridge the ports to read the flashing codes, a bit of googling and 1996 USA LS400's are obd2 compliant, but our Uk ones of the same age arnt. checked my other LS400 which is a few years younger and thats the same too..

It would've been nice to have a MPG gadget etc Bahhh!

Any devices that read through the LPG ecu connector that do similar?

Ahh you are confusing obd with the californian air resorces board, californian OBD. The first OBD standard i suppose, but not full OBD as we know it today. Infact OBD2. But yes it was the pre runner to OBD. But ever so slightly different. They designed the 16 pin DLC that we all know now, but the pins weren't necessarily in the right order ! So you cant gaurantee that pin 7 is the k line pre 2000

Ive already got an Autel MS509 reader, so I may just buy an adapter for a fiver and give it a try

Ok, but you wont get far with that plug.....its for abs, airbags, traction contol etc. basically the body ecu. Petrol ecu is the plug under the bonnet.

yeah thats the one I meant, the rectangular 22pin for the diag port

Sorry i hadnt noticed you posted another pic. Does it have anything marked up in the lid. Like k+ and k- etc. i woukd be intersted to see if you do manage it. Then again. You may need a JOBD scanner if its an import.

Ill get a photo in the morning of the lids markings, its a UK car if that makes it simpler.
