A fault at the tank or the wiring run to it as just as likely. Get an assistant to listen for clicks - you should get one at each end, the valves do make a clonk.
As you've got a whole spare, it seems sensible to change it. Not too difficult if it is the same pattern, else the pipe angles & unions may be different.

Success!

After all that fiddling about; it turned out to be the one part I thought couldn't be the problem - the coil which had already been replaced.

In the end, I didn't replace the whole valve - although it is pretty straightforward to do, lack of clearance meant that I was going to have to remove a lot of pipes etc. so. I thought I'd just try replacing the coil again before dismantling a lot of the system.

Happily, this turned out to be the problem part after all. The coil I removed smelt of burnt plastic so, I assume, it must have had an internal short or failure which was enough to stop the switch-over but not a complete failure. So, if it did switch, it would run OK on gas.

Thanks to all who have taken an interest in this thread and for all the great advice I've received.
