LPG install by Tubbs - Independent Autogas

Hi all

I just wanted to share some info which people might find handy.

I was looking for a conversion for my 2 litre turbo 2001 Astra Coupe. I went to all the fitters around me - had quotes of £1095 from two polish companies fitting Stag, and a quote of £1895 from an LPGA approved company fitting Zafoli.

I was then approached by Tubbs on this forum. Offering either a Bigas or Emer system for £995 ( I also decided to have electronic flashlube fitted at £1145).

I wasn't really happy with any of the local fitters - they didn't want to give any in-depth information and none had done a turbo before, wheras Toby really put my mind at rest, giving lots and lots of good information and had the benefit of experience with my engine.

So I dropped it off to him last Saturday, talked about it for ages, clarified everything, talked me through the whole process, really put my mind at rest. Nethertheless, I worried about it all week. And then picked it up yesterday (Saturday).

Well, what a waste of worry! A fantastic install - neat, everything placed with consideration to the fact that I work on my own car, just all great. Toby went through everything under the bonnet before going for a long test drive - gave it some beans right up the rev rage, absolutely no probems. No problems on the 100 mile journey home either - fantastic! I've just done another 50 mile trip-no problems, it's going great! And the message from Toby the whole time was, 'any problems, ring me'. I've got all my certificates which my insurance compay are happy with, and now can't believe I spent all that time worrying about choosing an installer which wasn't going to ruin my life! He even re-soldered a dodgy Earth wire connection which I had previously soldered myself (terribly!) and I was complaining about when I brought it down. For me, it just doesn't get any better than that!

So if anyone is up in Herefordshire and looking for an install, I would thoroughly reccomend Toby.

Please note-this review wasn't requested my Toby - I feel it may be of benefit to people who, like me, have read all the horror stories about bodged conversions and are really worrying about gettting their car converted because they feel choosing an installer is such a big risk. So I hope this is of help, and hope that others can post stories of successful conversions to steer people in the right direction. Also, I will be updating this thread with any positive and negative experiences!

Hi all

Just wanted to do a quick update on this post. The car has been running great until a few weeks ago, when it started misfiring when switching over. I emailed Toby describing the fault and received a reply by the end of the day - 'when can you bring it up?'. Great. So, last Saturday, Toby had the 'pleasure' of me yabbering at him while he sorted out my problem. It turned out an injector had died, which was replaced straight away. A test drive turned out the problem wasn't fixed, so we spent the next 5 hours (5 hours of free time on a Saturday!!! ) trying things, test driving it, trying something else, test driving it. In the end, it turns out that a set of replacement spark plugs sorted the problem, so Toby spent the whole of his Saturday diagnosing something which wasn't even a gas fault. Top bloke!

So, if anyone is considering a conversion and needs a recommendation, I can honestly say that I wouldn't go to anyone else!

Glad it was an ignition fault. I just like to exhaust all possibilities first. I have to say failures are extremely rare on that system, but with everything you get the odd one here and there. I blame the exceptionally cold winter ! Failed injector coil. At least it packed up during the warranty period i suppose

Tubbs has been helping me to on here and I couldn't find a bad word for him even if I tried.

Id like to repay the favours by getting him to do my next car (which untill this week was also going to be a astra coupe turbo)

That is some serious warranty period - nearly 2 years - Tubbs deserves an award.

Any decent installer will give a 2 year warranty as standard. The less than decent ones may promise it but whether they honour it, or are even still in business, is a different matter.

Minimum 2 years. Tbh i don't worry too much, if someone brings a 4 year old conversion i generally don't charge either. Perhaps bits and a 'drink'. But thats about it.
