Mazda RX8 LPG Conversion
Hi,

A friend of mine was impressed with the prins autogas conversion on my 330ci and was wondering if a conversion could be done on his Mazda RX8.

Bearing in mind that this is a rotory engine - is there any reason that a conversion shouldn't be carried out?

Perhaps one of the professional installers could offer their opinion

Cheers
James
Mazda RX8 LPG Conversion
Hi James, i dont know any one who has converted an RX8 yet.

Petrol injection strategies seem to be the stumbling block, rotaries need an awfull lot of fuel in relation to engine size.

Cheers Keith

www.gastech.org.uk

I haven't done one either.

I'd relish the challenge but there is a lot of intertia against it. Research takes time and many cannot do without their cars for that long. Add to that the fact that folk will try and use a company that has done the job before. Result is that no one gets to go first!

The only way I can get around that is to buy a car (I often do that for development) but I'm not sufficiently curious to go and buy a Rotary.

Are there any Rotary models out there that would provide a good research platform whilst not being too high in price?

Regards

Steve

www.go-lpg.co.uk

Mazda RX8 LPG Conversion
I do know of rotary engines that have been converted on mixer systems. To convert a RX8 you will need to use gas injection. I don't see the Piro having any problems running this engine but as Steve has pointed out the conversion is going to take some to make sure it is running correctly.
This is not a conversion the avarage installer would take on.

Simon,

That's good to hear. If the rotary can be converted with one make of equipment it is very likely that can be done using others.

Regards

Steve

www.go-lpg.co.uk

Steve & All

I guess it’s possible; we did not do this so I am not sure of any difficulties.

But I know you will remember our system is fundamentally different to most of the others on the market. We DO NOT have a fuel map nor do we have a hidden map. We use injector duration and event analysis to predict our injection times. This is fundamentally different to any other system.

We also have EOBD software that allows our ECU to monitor fuel trims and recalibrate the SLY Gas Injection system in real time, again something that no other system can do.

Coupled with the above we also have one if not the fastest injector on the market, which gives us very precise timing advantages.

It would be nice to know if it were possible with other makes as I feel sure it probably is. My only concern is that usually our system needs little or no additional setup from the installer once the calibration at idle has been done, unlike may of the others which require a substantial amount of setting up time refining their fuel maps.

Simon

Re: Mazda RX8 LPG Conversion
I can confirm having had our rx8 converted by Simon at Egas / Hardys that it is a successful conversion. Ours was converted at 57,000 miles and has now covered 91,000 with no issues other than now being well overdue for an LPG service! We get around 150 miles to the tank currently costing around £30 to fill whereas we'd get about 220 miles on £75 of fuel.

Re: Mazda RX8 LPG Conversion
Hi, if you check on the mazda rotary forums, you will see that this sort of conversion does get done fairly often, more so with RX-7s than RX-8s, where mpg was usually in the region of 18-20, and after market CPUs for controlling boost as well as ignition timing and injection are the norm.
The rotary engines need something different than fully sequential injectors; and their effective capacities are a lot larger than their swept volumes; depending on the porting you are looking at duties of 100HP per injector for normal tuned 13B engines. for the wildly tuned, and turbocharged engines you could easily get 250 plus HP.
