Vauxhall Combo Dual Fuel

#1 Post by pauly »

I have a 52 plate Combo dual fuel van which has decided to run like a bag of nails on gas. The local main dealer quoted £250 plus to clean the vapouriser. An LPG guy in Alcester, cannot remember name of garage, told me that the plugs could be worn and to get the van serviced before i do anything else. Still won't run on gas. Can i clean vapouriser myself or is it main dealer time? LPG guy said GM kit requires special kit to service is this right? Or does anyone out there know of any independant service centres near Cheltenham Gloucestershire that will do GM?
Any help appreciated as i feel the main dealer is a rip off. They wanted £50 to list the fault codes, bloke who serviced it did it for free.
Cheers
Paul

sounds like what my astra is doing found that vaporisor is leaking gas in inlet through vacuum pipe you can access the fault codesfor the gas ecu yourself there is a grey wire below the change over switch which you earth out with the ignition on and the gas switch turned to run on gas, then it gives out blink codes with the light in the switch. if you give me your email address i will email the instructions of how exactly to do it and what the codes mean.

I have a 52 combo also (just purchased) when i switch over to lpg the light just flashes constantly. Is this nomal or do i have a problem ? I really do know nothing about lpg but i am a willing learner. I have researched this but could find nothing related to the combo before stumbling upon this site. I assume the light should flash until its set up to run on gas then it should go out.
Please help
Mrplumb

The Combo is a Vauxhall, right?

If so it is going to be the Koltec system that is installed. (Probably)

The light should only flash for a few seconds in this warmer weather (Flashes for longer in winter). The light will then extinguish or just glow dimly. You should hear a quiet click clunk type noise as relays activate etc. at the same time. You will then be running on gas. If the light starts flashing at a faster rate, this means the system has attempted, maybe very briefly, to run on LPG but has found a problem in doing so and has revereted back to running on Petrol again. It will not try and run on LPG again until you switch off the engine and on again.

If it does not run on gas, do not assume the worst.

The problem could be very minor. Have you overfilled the engine with oil? Is your exhaust in good condition, namely collapsed or blowing badly? Make sure you have the vehicle serviced and cleaned up in the right places by someone that knows the Vauxhall very well and installs the absolute correct spark plugs, air filter etc. for Dual-Fuel vehicles. If this does not sort out your problem, then seek out an LPG engineer that knows the Koltec system. Ignore all the 'Oh this is a **** system' and the like type comments, you'll get that no matter what you have installed.

Best of luck

Paul

Yes it is a vauxhall and with further investigation i have since found that the when i turn on the ignition with the van set to gas i get the clunk noise mentioned. However when the vehicle is running and i attempt to switch over to gas no noise is heard and the van does not swith over to gas. Having just peered into my engine i find you are correct and see a koltec vapourizer in place. When the vehicle is running on petrol and i switch over it does not even attempt to switch to gas no clunk no change over on the fuel gauge nothing. I have tried whilst the vehicle was upto temp to switch off the ignition whilst driving then switch over to gas (getting the clunk noise) then let the clutch go but still not even a stutter. Its simply isnt switching. The oil levels are fine the spark plugs ngk the vehicle has just been serviced by an rac registered garage but still no joy. This will now become an obsession with me until its sorted that's the way i am. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. I have been to a vauxhall dealer with the vehicle but they want £90 an hour to hook up to their computer and a £60 stand alone fee. That's £150 before a spanner is even picked up in anger i would much prefer to learn about this system and do the job myself.
Thanks in advance
mrplumb

I have seen a post on here a while back with info. on contact details for somebody in Holland (Probably wrong there) that is very helpful with regards the Koltec system. I made a note of this on another PC. Will post this for you when I get onto that computer. Somebody on this Forum may well suggest things for you to check in the meantime.

Regards

Paul

Paul thanks alot mate, I found the Dutch guy and I am awaiting his response (apparently he is a koltec guru) his name was Kver (i think) from the AskAnOwner website. Ive just earthed out the grey wire in order to gain my fault codes but the light just stays on dont know if this is a fault code itself but there you go. That's my latest update on proceeding's and if I do recieve an answer from Kver I will post it here so other users can use the knowledge. Thanks again Paul and any others that may have any knowledge on this.

Regards

Mike

Extremely helpful the Dutch guy and very swift to respond. He helped me to find my fault diagnostic wire (which in my vehicle was situated in it's own fuse retainer within the engine next to my radiator fan) got the code and sent it to him and it's the temperature sensor (which was his first guess). Im now hoping he has one for sale then hopefully i can be cooking on gas by the weekend. The fault code wire is the grey one on the end of the four port connector.

Im still stuck im afraid I got the code 12 from fault dignosis and it actually turns out to be the pressure sensor which is at fault. Can I locate it No, its not on my gas splitter but there is another component which the gas splitter is bolted to (see photo). A wire runs from this component to another small connector(with 3 wires) which then attaches to the rocker cover. Could this be my pressure sensor?(pic 2) Does anyone know what the unidentified component is next to the fuel splitter. This i am told is the Koltec GSI system. Apologies for the huge pictures I dont know how to downsize them

Hi Ron,

I only have a Dutch explanation for code 12.

Code 12 Geen toerentalsignaal (Alleen bij ouder type zonder temperatuursensor)

Looking at a translation it seems to be something concerning the revolution of the engine.??

The one to tell you would be Mr Plumb if he has managed to repair his van. He says he has the same fault code.

I also found the following explanation from a Dutch guy.

The RPM signal calls at us "toerentalsignaal" and is connected with a green wire.
This can be a signal which is at stationairy revs about 1,5 volts and go to 5 volts at max rotations.
At some cars is this signal a pulsing signal which only can checked with a scope.

I've sent you a email too.

pjpj

Gastech can supply and fit the injectors.
If you contact the office 01480 437773 and ask for details and prices.
They are nowhere as dear as the prices quoted above.
cheers Keith

www.gastech.org.uk

This thread is from 2007, please start your own thread with the system and your problem and people will help. If you have the Koltek system then put that in the title so that pjpj can pick it up easier.
