Converting a Chevy Supercharged V8 to LPG

#1 Post by Island_boy_HSV »

Hello every one, I have read a few posts about converting V8's to LPG my question is a bit more involved.

I have a pickup truck running a supercharged chevy LS2 engine it's about 560bhp and currently get 29MPG on a motorway run (my typical use for the truck).

The boost is set at about 12psi, would there be any specific issues in converting to LPG. I have approched one of the national companies but they never get back to me.

The supercharger is mounted in the valley between the heads, I would prefer not to drill the supercharger manifiold, is there any adaptors so that you could inject the LPG through the same hole as the fuel?

The picture below is the engine layout.

Thanks in advance.

Hi , there wont be a problem converting your truck,we have converted supercharged v8,s before , also the normally aspirated version of your engine with 350bhp.

you will have to drill the manifold to get enough gas in ,however it will look neat and as near factory as poss!!.

The kit we use will only require 1 injector per cylinder , but it will need 2 vaporisers to cope with demand at full power.if you give the office a call we will be pleased to give you all the info you need .

cheers Keith

Thanks for the replies, looks like drilling the manifold is the only way forward. I will give your company a ring tomorrow when I am back in the office.

that is sweet , just shows what you can do with dedicated lpg.

The injectors are std yellow spot as fitted to most v8,s.

Cheers Keith

your drilling problem, solution

Hi

i am new to LPG modifications and this forum.
But why not use NOS-injectors, the type you use together with injector!

from holley page:
"The 08001NOS NOSzle is a 3–piece billet aluminum design which is precision machined to channel additional fuel and nitrous while housing your existing fuel injector. This method of distributing fuel and nitrous takes the danger out of single–nozzle fogger systems and the hassle out of traditional direct port fogger kits. For a high performance EFI motor, The NOSzle is perfect in form and function."

See Holley.com

This must be ideal, only problem you will have is the fuel rails. they will have to be relocated.
I know it might be to late for you, but I just become a member here!

true..
somone should make something like that! so the flow would be enough!

after I post my last repy, I was thinking the same as you rossko.

But do you think this holley part would be good for my Dodge RAM1500, 5,9 litre V8 250 hp?
have the OMVL dream XXI N system on my car, but I am not satisfyed with the mounting off the injectors. they are like on the top off the manifoild. about 15 cm away from the petrol-injectors. Don't like that..

sorry to change the subject here!

You do have to chuckle at the American's though. 250bhp out of a 5.9 litre V8? An engine that size from any European or Japanese manufacturer would be putting a smidge more power onto the road than that

ooohhh..
would that engine move a truck and trailer at about 6000 kg up that road with 10-11% climb. I belive I will overtake that rice-cooking-machine there!!
By the way I like to bring my family in my car, and they like to enjoy the ride!

I know what you mean, but really, once you've got used to a V8 you'll never be happy with a 4 pot 'half an engine' IIRC the 3.5 in my 110 is nominally something like 134hp so about the same hp/cc - but compared with a 4 pot it's so smooth. Even pulling away from a roundabout in 4th at 30mph (having gone round the roundabout in 4th) I can just put my foot down and it will pull smoothly away (it's hauling over 2 tons of Land Rover don't forget) - it can even pull in 5th at 25mph  though I'll be the first to admit that performance is on the slow side of glacial doing that  A 4-pot would be clattering about and trying to climb out of the engine bay at those low revs.

There is a lot to be said for a large, low stress engine that just provides torque instead of something doing an impression of a bluebottle trapped in a jam jar

Now imagine what a nice large V8 could do if it got the development other engines have had towards improving economy.
Land Rover 110 V8 LPG
Land Rover 90 petrol (no longer diseasel :D), still awaiting V8 & LPG

With the HSV moniker, do you drive an HSV ute in the UK? Is that what the LS2 is in?

But which engine will have the higher torque and at a far more useful rpm?

I've seen the normally aspirated version of the LS2 running an impco mixer system on boats and that is round the 350hp mark. I've also seen dual 425 systems making way over 600HP so if you didn't want to drill the intake you could experiement with these.

Technocarb also do single mixer systems which will flow over 550hp so don't discount the old fashioned technology just yet.
