Why run a car on LPG

We I knew it would happen, and it has. The government have shown their true green credentials, I have done my sums and it is no longer economically viable to run my car on LPG. I am going to look at a modern diesel next weekend and will be trading in the Land Rover. At the end of the day I like to do my bit for the environment, but at the end of the day the tax burden is so great under this government I begrudge spending all that extra money to be green when Millions are being wasted on so called worthy causes. Well done Blair, Brown another Chelsea Tractor off the road even though I live in the middle of no where. Damian

well try and find the most smokiest, stinky one you can and drive all day around Westminster ... 'spose this means the end of this forum!!! how about writing to this Mark Schuck <a href="mailto:Mark.Schuck@dft.gsi.gov.uk">Mark.Schuck@dft.gsi.gov.uk</a> its the British attitude of giving up and letting them walk all over us ...which is exactly what you are doing Damian ... thats why they keep the price high....because you just accept it and don't complain. so write to the guy ....ever bloody-one write to him ...get him pissed off ...he'll either end LPG ....or go with us. Ermm how come it is no longer viable to run a car on LPG? I looked into this long and hard comparing the costs of petrol vs diesel cars of the same make - and whatever I did LPG came out as a good option...

Just done my sums and doing my 60k a year, I reckon that my Astra saves me £905 a year as we stand. That's taking my car at 30 mpg and a diesel at 55 mpg both of which I know that I have achieved regularly on the same daily journey so still worth while for me....

Well as long as I can hoon around in A 3.5L v8 for the cost of fueling a boering tractor like 2.5 deisel,} it's LPG all the way for me especialy when the total cost at the pump of LPG is less than the tax on a litre of petrol!

Based on current prices and economy it costs 23p per mile on LPG and 27p per miles on Petrol. Total annual saving of approx £450. OK car is tired, a V8 and needs replacing. Based on current usage we estimate that by switching to a more modern diesel we will be saving £ 120 a month on fuel, £ 1,440 per annnum. Damian ps. No plans to fold the forum for the time being however coming to that time of year when domains need renewing so may start begging again soon.

Oh I see - I think your calculation is flawed... Yes you might save 120 quids on your CURRENT spend, but surely the real calculation is working out the cost of buying and running the equivalent petrol model of your new car on LPG. Hi Damian, very sad to see you are potentialy going to fall off the green wagon. However , i have to question you maths,or your mpg on gas is horendous. It sounds like you need a tune up, feel free to call on my services . Cheers Keith

Actually I think they sound reasonable for an old V8... By reversing the calculation: LPG = 8 MPG Petrol = 14.8 MPG (there or thereabouts...) Possibly some tuning gains to be had - but that still avoids the fact that these current figures cannot be compared against running a new diesel. A new diesel has to be compared to the petrol model running on LPG... well that's my tuppence worth..

And dont think you are getting it easy with new diesels ...they have just a complicated set of electronics as the newest cars ...and more expensive to repair ...to boot .. mate of mine just had a vauxhall diesel go wrong on him ....£900 to fix the ecu problem !!!!! some fault like that could wipe out your diesel savings in one swoop. all the best.mark

I've never run it on LPG long enought to get those numbers. I've only used about 10 1/2 petrol tanks full since I've had it (nearly 2 years) Bro

I think what I missed was that for example on my Astra, I was comparing the same car running on gas and UL rather than comparing my car on gas with a new diesel. What Damian could do though is buy a newer LPG car such as a Vectra which are fairly easily available rather than a diesel. That would be my solution...

You are not comparing apples with apples! You have a bit of a glugger & of course it would be cheaper to switch to an economical modern car, but you may then be pushing out more noxious emissions than your current car... and even your (poorly!) calcs show a saving. So... I am no angel, I want to run a 2L performance car yet be sensitive to environmental concerns, so I did the switch. Do you want the performance, or to be low-carbon, that is the question? You can't throw the blame back on the Government, the differential is still there.

just had this sort of conversation with the owner of an A8 4.2 litre near the A3 ; he keeps a check on cost per mile on petrol and lpg [ converted when almost new ] ; he is saving 10p/mile on lpg , and at 170K so far that is a few bob !!

my 3 ton motor home costs 12p/mile on gas and 20p on petrol , so a trip to norfolk seems indicated to sort out that old rover V8 !
