Why does LPG only go up not down?

Does the price of oil affect the price of LPG? Petrol has gone down quite a bit lately why does lpg only go up Apart the obvious money grabbing bar stewards arguement

For what I know the price of LPG isn't directly related to oil anymore, but more related to home gas/fuel prices, which as you probably know are quite high. Something to do with the Russian maffia probably <IMG SRC="http://www.my90.co.uk/lpgforum/clipart/happy.gif" ALT=":-)" BORDER=0> We should be seeing a reduction in these early next year, so fingers cross the LPG distributers don't find another excuse to raise it before then. When I bought my installation just under a year ago LPG was 34.9p .. now it's 48.9p! Rich

The place where I fill up, the vast majority of the time, had their price at 39.9 at its highest recently. It is now down to 34.9. When I bought my car last year in June it was 29.9.

This is what frustrates me.. the M4 corridor seem to be 'hard to deliver fuel to' or something. I'm assuming that's their excuse for the prices being so much higher than a quiet northern region (for example). Unfortunatley there is no competition out there, certainly not around Reading - so why would they bother trying to cut their rates?! Rich

LPG prices are naturally linked to the prices of other road fuels even if their production is not reliant on the same infrastructure. This effect can be seen in the domestic fuel market, i.e if Electricity prices move up (mainly Coal reliant) then Gas follows shortly behind although it uses no Coal. I guess what we are describing are simply Energy prices which follow each other. One of the most clear things is that LPG is much slower to change its price at the pumps in the downward direction only, especially clear now petrol has dropped in price by 10ppl in my area in the last 4 wks. I suspect this is because LPG stocks are much slower to shift (only 130,000 vehicles using it) whereas Petrol and Diesel are repelenished at a new (maybe lower) price much more quickly. Sadly, LPG prices seem to move up at a much faster rate as the suppliers follow the prices of the other fuels. Still, my local petrol is 88ppl and LPG 39ppl. Enough of a saving.

We buy our autogas in bulk from Shell we have only had one price increase since january 2006, another local firm supplied by Flogas are the same, so all the other retailers that have put there prices up to follow petrol increases have done it for one reason.... The tanker leaves us then goes 20 miles to fill up a main road service station they charge an extra 6p per ltr, i asked them why they were so dear and was told that they were the only gas station around for miles. Thats why your gas is so dear, they got it you need it, not enough competition

Is it possible to compile a list of cheaper places to fill up - non forecourt types? I know Steve sells LPG much cheaper than the the main retailers, but its not cost effective for me to travel all the way over to him for a fillup. Can we identify all these hidden LPG merchants - maybe there is one right on my doorstep that I just dont know about?

Tim, the best way to find hidden suppliers is to think sideways and ask the delivery drivers if there are any in the area.

The Price of LPG like the price of petrol will go up and come down. There are seasonal variations to bear in mind but in general the price of LPG is very stable. For the life of me I can not see the basis at present for prices above 40ppl, I am not saying that is the correct price I am saying that I see no reason for it to be higher. We are based in North Wales most things cost more here because of transportation costs. We have been as high as 43ppl but have recently reduced prices to 39.9ppl. This is a reflection of the decrease in the cost of LPG. we could probably drop to the low 30's and still make a small profit. I am mystified why I see prices in the high 40's 46.9 etc all over the country but particularly in the south. I can only suggest that actions speak louder than words. By all means if you have to buy at these inflated prices but buy sparingly go to the manager and explain that you would have filled up but he or the company he works for are profiteering. Petrol retailers are used to making very small margins on petrol, as low as 1 to 2 pence a litre so why are they trying to make 10 to 15 pence per litre out of LPG. This price inflation is damaging to the industry and unnecessary expense to the LPG motorist. Fight Back write to the chief executive of the companies concerned !
