Does An LPG ECU Need Reprogramming After Battery Failure?

Hi all,

Basic question. I've had my 2001 VW Passat estate converted to LPG back in 2022 as I now do ~550miles a week commute. All seems fine but this morning the battery died on me without warning. Turned the ignition and it hardly turned the engine over and everything flickered and temporarily went blank as it does. I tried a couple of times before jump starting.

It's a Romano system and because he couldn't fit a lube bar he tuned it to burn a little bit of petrol to help with lubrication WRT valve stems. He said it wasn't strictly necessary but thought it worth it rather than risk any trouble. Anyway ECUs tend to reset themselves on power loss but they are designed for the car, not like the generic Romano unit which is specifically programmed for it.

I have made an appointment to get the ECU checked out and if necessary reprogrammed, but:
1) Is there any risk to using LPG in the meantime? Using petrol will cost £75-100 more per week. Obviously don't want to do any damage but also don't want to waste money unnecessarily.
2) Will the Romano, when reset to default, refuse to work, only allowing petrol to be used?
3) Beyond rough idling etc, is there a definitive way to know if it needs reprogramming due to it being reset?

It should retain its settings and work as normal after changing the vehicle battery.

If it didn't retain its settings and mixture was incorrect you'd probably soon know anyway because either/both it wouldn't run smoothly / the engine warning light would come on.

There should be no risk if it seems to drive OK on LPG and the warning light doesn't come on.
