Back Again With a New Moan

I've not been around for a while as things automotive have been ... well ... good ... ish.

One dead external hard drive and one laptop that doesn't like cola and here I am ... again. GBs of data lost, but most of the porn was saved. phew!

The Rover's gone, as has the Rolls, the Toyota, the Vauxhall and the Leyland Dodge. But the yank Dodge is here to stay.

And stay it does.

Stay still. Immobile. Not running. No vroom!

Back story. I had it converted locally (Doncaster area, I forget whom) several years ago and it's run sweet as a nut ever since. Over Winter it blew a top hose, rottted out the temp sender, froze up and shredded the huge serpentine belt. All fixed now, but 3 days of happy stooging around in it later and ... no lights on the LPG fuel level gauge. No idiot lights on the dash although everything else electrical is working. No flow of petrol to the motah. The AA couldn't detect any signs of life from the petrol pump, so I'm assuming that something's up with the LPG brains. Instead of failsafing (assuming that it has a failsafe mode) to petrol only, it's now shut down everything associated with the fuel supply - both sides. It churns over happily. It sparks the plugs. It simply doesn't start.

'My man' familiar with Yank motors can't even look at it for several days and I have no practical way of getting it to the original converter - not without spending God knows how much on a transporter company. (One wanted over £200 to pull a folding camper 30 miles!)

So I'm obviously seeking advice from the Brains Trust of Britain for pointers.

Anything, old chums?

Many thanks in advance for any and all hints.

I've been checking and it was LPGC who did the conversion. Hello Simon :D

I remember you Sir Henry and I vaguely remember your van... but I don't remember many details about your van so I don't remember what components or even type of components (mixer system or sequential system) was fitted... It's probably best if you put your reg on forum so I can dig details out or if you phone me with info about your van/conversion so I can advise accordingly...

For instance, if I fitted a mixer system and the LPG switch isn't lighting and it won't run on petrol it would likely be because the petrol electrical fuel shut off valve is closed shut until you open the manual override lever on said solenoid / If it is a sequential system, the LPG switch doesn't light and it won't run on either fuel it would likely be because of an original vehicle fitment blown fuse or relay not part of the LPG system.

PM reply sent.

As it was converted a few years ago records will be on an older computer so I'll have to dig them out before knowing what LPG parts are fitted.

From info so far it's looking like something wrong with the car itself.... no power to the engine and the LPG lights shouldn't come on (that's normal), we know that the dash lights and fuel pump don't turn on so we wouldn't expect the LPG lights to come on. Which would leave the question: Why is there no power to the fuel pump and engine electronics (besides coil) when the ignition is turned on? Which points to fuses, relays, petrol ECU, immobiliser if fitted.

PM'd Sir Henry back this morning.

Just checked older records (converted this one 4 years ago) and found I fitted a sequential system with 2 tanks etc.

Sir Henry, the sequential system won't disable the fuel pump or do anything that could be related to the problems you described... A decent 'normal' mechanic can disregard the LPG system being fitted when doing diagnostics etc, the problem will be due to some aspect of the car itself (not the LPG system). The mechanic should start by looking at why the fuel injectors and usual dash lights don't get power when the ignition is turned on.

Regards, Simon.
