Millbrook Mayhem...

#1 Post by danny7147 »

Right, I'm really hoping someone can offer some advice on an ongoing problem that's been driving me insane...

We've got a pair of factory fit LPG Vauxhalls, an Astra and a Vectra. The Vectra has been an absolute star, doing airport transfers almost every day and never (touch wood!) letting us down!

The Astra on the other hand has been hell. We bought it from a trader who "didn't know" about the faults it had, and although most of the mechanical ones have now been ironed out, the misfire problem still exists. This is it...

It's a 1.6 Dual Fuel "Comfort". I ran it to the areas local LPG installer a couple of days ago for a diagnostic and his results came back that one of the LPG injectors had "gone". Apparently, if you run it on petrol it's fine, but if you flick it to LPG the engine shuts down the cylinder and won't use it again until the fault code has been cleared. He told me that it would need to be replaced with an identical injector, that they're as rare as hens teeth (and after checking Ebay I see his point) and that it would be more economical to fit a new system.

I have, however, been told that it "might" be possible to replace the injectors with a type from a different system... and that's why I'm really appealing for help before I just disable the LPG and run it as a "spare" petrol taxi instead.

It hasn't had it's filters checked, the diagnostic was the only work done... so does anyone have thoughts on this? Is it dead or is there hope for the old girl?

The Necam injectors are a bit special - lightweight gubbins means they are fast acting, the age of the design means they are high impedance.
Contemporary parts from other makes (if not life expired too) will not do, too slow acting.
Modern parts from other makes will not do, too low impedance, short life for the ECU.

There is someone offering a repair/substitute kit, as pointed out.

I've had success using Matrix XJ injectors - just as quirky but that's good as they happen to have similar characteristics, still available new at a price.

It is first worth attempting to revive the old injectors with solvent/cleaner - this is kill or cure though, frequently fixes one and trashes another.

It's better to try and get the system sorted.
They are a right P.I.T.A to fit another system on over the top.
The duel fuel cars are nobbled to within an inch of their lives, it's like trying to unravel yoghurt.
