Bargain???

#1 Post by antimony »

Is it just me, or did this seem like a total bargain.
Or does it show that already converted cars are worth no more (or even less) than unconverted?

Pity I don't need or want another car otherwise I'd have been bidding on that.

Too late, it sold for £1380 which seems a pretty good price to me. Saabs are currently a bit strange. Guy at work has just traded one in and everyone sucks in through their teeth and starts muttering about Saab no longer existing so you can't get spares for them. In reality, GM have committed to supplying parts for the next 10 years so it isn't a problem but it does seem to be putting a lot of people off.

Or is it really a bargain ... Amongst other things the LPG system has a fault , it's not on the register and can't be put on the register in its current condition .....

Still all good, done over 30k on gas now!
Just the usual high mileage BMW faults to sort out - tired suspension bushes and a bit of a coolant leak.

But they are still bloody good cars. Especially the earlier 9-3 and the 9-5 that still have the Saab engine and not the later GM ones.

I was in my local engine reconditioners recently and we were talking about modern engines. He was referring to a lot of the modern ones as throwaway engines because it is not possible to buy things like big end and main bearing shells, oversize pistons and the like. A lot of the modern engines are just not designed to be taken apart and put back together, they are built to a price and once they are worn out, that is it, you are expected to throw the car away.

It's even possible to ruin a perfectly good engine by meddling. The old Saab B2XX engine as fitted to the 900 and 9000 was nigh on bulletproof and would easily last for 250,000 miles plus. When GM tinkered with the design to produce the 9-3 and 9-5, they did some mods to the crankcase ventilation and moved the cat closer to the sump. At the time they recommended using semi-synthetic oil but the extra heat from the cat caused the oil to gel in the sump which clogged the pickup strainer so the oil flow was reduced. The mods to the crankcase ventilation caused the crankcase to pressurise and the oil to remain at the top of the engine and not drain back to the sump. The result was numerous failed engines and finally they gave an 8 year, unlimited mileage warranty on all of the affected cars. I bought a 9-5 that had been given a complete new engine and turbo assembly, free of charge under the warranty, at 95,000 miles.

My neighboures once asked me to come over to jump start their vectra v6. That done, they explained that theyed just had just that day had a new oil press switch fitted. "Garage said it was faulty"apparently. I was blipping the throttle, when they then said the were going to London in said vectra "tommorrow". I said "not in this your not - listen to it"
With that it seized solid!
They never forgave me for breaking their car.. lol
