Changing V5 to dual fuel/LPG

Folks,
has anyone bothered doing this because I'm getting the right run around (or to be more accurate, my wife is). I told her she should tell the DVLA about the conversion so that the V5 is correct, thinking it would be a simple change which could be done at the same time that she changed her name from her maiden name on the V5.
However, DVLA Swansea - that repository of Mensa Members - returned the V5 unchanged with no further explanation. Calling them revealed nothing. We took it to the local post office, and they said we'll have to go to the local DVLA office (local = 40 miles away) and we may have to have the car inspected.

I'm a little bemused. Is it a legal requirement to get this worthless piece of paper changed? The car was registered in 2000 so the tax won't be affected.

It's a legal requirement to notify them of any changes; if they choose not to act on that information I'm sure you could argue that you've done all you need to by law! When I've changed engines they've been happy with something on headed paper from a garage, so that may suffice if you have a friendly local one you use? Or simply an MOT emissions print out showing it running on LPG?

Yes you need to go to the VRO in order to change it. You will need a certificate of conformity and the invoice from your installer. Its the invoice they are more interested in. If its a car with its grams per kilometre printed on the log book then you need an emissions print out. If it isnt you dont.

And i can give you a different opinion from Chester VRO!

When I went in, they accepted the invoice for the purchase of the kit (no proof that I actually fitted it), didn't want anything else and changed it over. What they will also say is that you need to take your tax disc in, they refund it and then you buy a new one while your there. What I did was wait until the near end of month and then changed the V5 and bought a new disc for the end of the month and they were fine with that.

That was a 03 plate so was emissions tested etc but they didn't need an emissions print out at all.

They are a law unto themselves arnet they ? Different experience from birmingham, my 'local' vro bloody miles away !

They just swapped my tax disc for a updated one, didn't have to muck about with a refund and purchase(Bristol VRO)

Thanks for your replies folks, I'll be adding a few Kg of CO2 to the atmosphere shortly on a trip to the "local" VRO....

I tried to change the V5 on my Saab using a safety inspection certificate that had been issued by a UKLPG member that came with it when I got the car. The system had been fitted some years previously by persons unknown and the certificate stated this where it asked for the installers name. My local DVLA office said that they could only accept an invoice from the original installer. When I pointed out that nobody seemed to know who the original installer was and the fact that the LPG system had been inspected would suggest that it had one fitted, I was just told that it didn't matter as it was too old to get a discount anyway. It remained as showing fuel type, petrol......

I sent my log book to DVLA with the fuel field filled in as a change with covering letter and copies of the receipt for the hardware and COP11 certificate.

Log book was returned suitably updated. Nothing done with tax disc.

How do you go on if you fit the system yourself and then get it inspected and a certificate issued??
I've bought a system to fit myself but have no invoice for it. I was just going to get it cetificated when it was done

That's exactly what I did and the above worked for me

UKLPG members don't issue a certificate any more, they enter your car on a database. You send your V5 to DVLA, they check it is on the database and issue the revised V5.

To the best of my knowledge there is no requirement for installers, professional or otherwise, to be members and non-members appear to still do certs.

There isn't, in which case you will need to send the certificate to DVLA when you send them your V5. Chances are that's the last time you'll ever see it though.

That's why I sent them copies, water marked "COPY" to keep the originals

When my S4 was done (not by me), they somehow forgot to put the model on, so now, no matter where I go, it shows up as an Audi.

Yup, an Audi. Not an Audi S4, not an S4 Avant and an Audi A4 S4, not an estate, just an Audi with engine size.
So I can never get proper insurance quotes with the reg, when taking it on ferries, I have to manually enter details.

Idiots.
