Vectra 'factory' system no go

I thought I would post this story for future reference.

Had a Vectra in yesterday with the late-model Necam "factory fit" GSI injection system. It had just dropped dead, no light at the switch.
Eventually after much checking of fuses etc. discovered ....

Red/black wire at switch is supposed to carry 12V with ignition on, used to work the light and get a switch signal. Same red/black wire runs to many other places carrying the power for the LPG system. But no 12V at the switch.

Even more 'eventually' found a six-way splice in the harness right behind the headlamp, inside the plastic sleeving. All covered in green powder. The heatshrink sleeving over the splice was not waterproof and it seems road splash can find its way behind the headlamp and inside the harness, eating the exposed copper at the splice. Cut out and repair okay.

It's quite likely different symptoms would arise if a different wire happened to be the first to corrode through, so worth checking if all red/black wires have ignition controlled 12V in the event of funny problems.
