Bear in mind the space heater is used in a draughty uninsulated barn so its probabbly far damper in there than you'd be dealing with as well hence the ice forming on it.

The relevant part of my system is on the back of a van, so probably more draughty and less insulated than your barn. I'm not seeing why it would matter if it ices up, apart from that the ice will insulate it somewhat. Maybe if the regulator ices up that would affect its operation, but I think that would be far enough away from the action that that would be unlikely.
I've got a bottle of gas now, so the idea has dropped back down the priority list again, but if the relevant parts come to hand to run an experiment, then I'll give that a go.
