How much is LPG in your area?

Yawn... Dave, you have to bear in mind that you are unlikely to get the money back for the lpg kit on a sale price unless you remove it and sell it seperately! I hope you have some luck with the sale. But i do wander if you've considered the economy of the oil burner... Is it actually going to be much different?

I am working on the basis that there is considerable anger about pet diesel prices in the Uk and various groups putting pressure on the govt to try and stem the rises, at least on the tax front.

There is NO one speaking out about the rises in LPG prices. From 30 p to average of 55p in two years and not a wimper.

Dave_k - I dont think everyone who converts to LPG has problems selling their cars - I think your conversion will not be suitable for a lot of people because of the short range and the fact that it only does 11mpg on gas.

Add to it that they probably do a google search to find more info on lpg and find all ur posts discussing what a waste of time gas is. Its not your fault that the installer didnt explain to you what the range on gas is - which is why I always say speak to someone who has had a conversion on the same car and is happy - and go to that person. Better luck next time.

I sold my lpg astra easily, for the same price I paid for it, with 13,000 more miles on. Before that I had a 1982 Mercedes on gas which again I had no trouble selling.

Slight case of selective memory here - 2 years ago I couldn't even buy LPG in bulk for 30ppl and today it is still readily available on forecourts in the North East for 51ppl.
The actual cost of LPG is not important, what is important is the difference between the cost of Petrol & LPG, it is a sad fact that ALL UK road fuels are expensive we just have to make the best of what we have available.

In 2001 when I got my first car LPG converted I based my costings on the local forecourt prices of LPG @ 39.9ppl & Petrol @ 79.9ppl, 40ppl difference.
Today the same garage has LPG @ 51.9 & Petrol @ 104.9 so contrary to what the doom mongers have been telling me (and everyone else running LPG) seven years later the savings are even greater at 53ppl.

These bigger savings mean that there has never been a better time to buy and convert a V8. Big petrol engined cars can be bought for a fraction of their new price then converted and ran at a very affordable rate on LPG. I've just bought a 2 year old Grand Cherokee 5.7 to put on LPG, I'm not stupid enough to think that some thing that weighs nearly 2 tons with a big engine and shaped like a brick will ever be "economical" but I do know that like all of my previous LPG cars it will give petrol levels of performance and refinement and will give me huge savings compared to petrol costs (my last jeep saved me over 10K comared to petrol costs).
An important point here is that LPG is not always just about cost there is more to life that saving a few pennies here and there, I'm delighted with LPG, I've tried diesel but am now back to LPG - don't believe everything that you are told about diesel MPG and don't forget how much diesel price has escalated.

Try the gas station directly next door (FloGas). Currently 44.1p per litre. I personally found the owner and son at GT Gas very idiosyncratic and quite unpleasant if you have any sort of customer complaint issue.

I get my fill up at FloGas and shoot off - that's all I need.

Don't understand the Flogas situation. Are they not a national chain of gas wholesalers ?. If they are, why do they charge 49p lt at my depot and 44.1 at another ?

Two reasons

1. The stations are franchised therefore the owners are free to set their own price.

2. The wholesale price of gas varies so much that it will depend when they get a fill at what price they will charge.

62p a litre on the Isle of Wight and only one independent selling it. They have not put the price up for some months, but it used to be about 15p a litre more than the price charged in Southampton. I have got fed up with always having to go into Newport to refill the tank and needing to drag someone out from the shop to do it and am selling the car (in the For Sale section) if anyone is interested in a great Saab 9-5.

I can't find this FloGas depot listed on the LPG site. However, if it has the same postcode as GT Gas then I guess I can find it with my TomTom. (I get lost easily. No sense of direction at all!) Can you please tell me the opening hours and whether FloGas takes credit cards?

Is it the same as the Calor Centre at 145 Etruria Rd. ST1 5NF ?

Is there any way to contact this site and get them to update it? I drove 40 miles to one of their listed stations last week, only to find it had closed down! OK, it wasn't far off my intended route but still a nuisance. Also, they don't list several local places near here so they must be missing dozens across the country.

I'm very happy with my LPG conversion. I don't think it's feasible to convert my Vectra 2.5 V6 auto to diesel.

You're not an Apple Mac user, Dave, perchance? I mean, you are not going to keep jumping in and telling us how diesel engines are easier to drive, less prone to viruses and really good value for money ... are you?

Just the excuse the barmy government needs to raise duty on diesel next time round, as that'll be the current "bad fuel" at budget time. All in the name of revenue-gathering, obviously!

paid 53.9 this morning on the a435 out of birmingham onto the m42, paid 44p at bham autogas last week - thats an extra £5 for a tank! If I paid 59.9 on the motorway that would be an extra £8 a tank and would make a big difference to the payback time of my installation.

Good point about payback. However, I don't suppose mine will ever pay back.

If you are travelling the M6 near J16 before 5pm it could be worth your while to use these stations. FloGas and GT gas are separated only by a fence. FloGas is cheaper at 44.9 p (I think) but GT Gas includes some sort of cleaning additive and lubricant in their LPG.

Directions
Turn off the M6 at J16 and drive up the A500 following signs for Stoke. Turn off the A500 at the Hanley slip road (a few miles) and stay in the left lane at the roundabout, which will take you down to a very large roundabout beneath a flyover. Go all the way round the flyover and back up the dual carriageway towards the A500. Before you reach the A500 again, turn left and follow the road in a sweeping left curve. You'll see FloGas across the road in front of you with GT Gas on its left. Take your pick!

'Payback time' calculations should be based on the price difference between gas and petrol. If you pay 1.00 for gas when petrol is 2.00 it will 'pay back' quicker than when paying 50p for gas with petrol at 1.00.

My saving on gas compared to petrol at 44p (todays price at 1 place) is £15 a tank, at 54p(also todays price at another palce) then I only save £10 a tank (both of these are based on todays petrol price of 106) - so my payback is almost 50% longer at 54p than it is at 44p!!!!!!!! So it does make a big difference to my payback time!
