Performance conversion for a V8

#1 Post by bonny »

Hi folks, newbie on the board - I've posted an introduction elsewhere, but have some queries around a new conversion.
I know what can be done as my previous installer has done a great job for me before even though he is completely wedded to a single manufacturer (being OMVL). It's hard to find fault with that as he's done a great job for us on three cars with systems that have been well installed and ultimately, reliable over high mileage.
He is now saying he's having problems getting supply of the systems when I have asked about converting my new workday ride, this may be genuine or he may just not want to get into this one.

So, I have acquired a Mercedes E55 AMG, supercharged V8 5.5l rocket ship. I have been using the car since end November and had it serviced to ensure all is right and it is running beautifully so I know we have the basis for a good conversion i.e. it works properly on petrol.

Concerns are feeding enough gas to keep a 467Bhp lump happy (though I don't drive everywhere flat out) and valves/seats.
I want a good, tidy conversion which will run like it does on petrol and be reliable for the long term as do a lot of miles. Any recommendations?
It would be nice to use someone just down the road or at least in a 2 hour radius, but that may be unrealistic.
Your experience and input gratefully received.
Bon

I think you are probarbly being unrealistic thinking you can get an installer competent to convert this car within a 2 hr drive.
Tinley tech have just become the authorised distributor for omvl. But I think that would struggle.
To spec up a car like that, high flow valves, 4 hole tank and all you would be looking in the £1700 mark.
Mercedes generally don't suffer from vsr. But for peace of mind it may be worth installing one.

I know exactly who your installer is! He is a top guy and easy to get on with.

As to the AMG, OMVL is going to struggle injector wise without some clever tinkering. You would need twin vapourisers and to make OMVL work you would have to use some custom parts that OMVL made for one customer only.

I would suggest going for a slightly more reliable vapouriser well two of them and fitting some of the high flow Europegas injectors. You could keep it with the same ECU so that David would still be able to service it etc.

Thanks for the input so far, I wasn't suggesting I necessarily wanted OVML for the new car, just that's what has been fitted to my cars previously by a one make installer.

And yes, I think Dave is a good guy... I'm not finding fault there.

So, for the AMG, who's my man and what would they put in it?

I would opt for the premium Europegas system with the Europegas injectors and twin Vapourisers so that you have reserve on the gas flow capability even if one vapouriser could just about do it. Tank will need to be fitted with the BFC valve as the normal valve and pickup will not have enough flow in it.
Price wise you would be looking at £1700 all included.

BTW you are not far from my sisters house, she is a bit further up the motorway.

If I remember rightly the last ML55 AMG I did had a huge exhaust box under the rear where the tank would go ... Does yours have the spare wheel mounted on the nearside rear of the boot on a bracket ?? The AMG that I did wasn't supercharged but ran (and still does run) impeccably. Just check under the rear floor for the exhaust.

I recently converted a CLS55AMG, runs fine, no problems. This has the 5.5 supercharged engine, a rather quick car being the little CLS with that engine! Very tight in the CLS engine bay but still fitted two reducers, runs totally on gas even at full throttle and high rpm. Your ML is an easier conversion.

I have sold DIY conversion kits to several ML AMG owners, all run very well and were installed according to my advice. The DIY conversions were only normally aspirated conversions, though. The supercharged models like the CLS55AMG I mentioned above need multiple high performance components and need extra care during calibration.

I'm in Yorkshire (just South of Pontefract), so not within a 2 hour drive! However, if you want a good job doing and excellent results I'm ready to convert it. I have repeat customers from Scotland whom bring every car they buy to me for conversion.

Would charge £1700 for a totally capable system. Feel free to post pics of the finished install and comment on results/impressions on this forum afterwards!

Thanks for your input folks, much appreciated.

I just need to work out timing and logistics to getting the car to someone to convert when the nearest of you is three hours away.

cheers
