Juddering on LPG?? Garge recommendation nr Bath??

#1 Post by da_murphster »

Hi all,

I have an E39 530i on BRC - car and LPG system has been excellent - until yesterday.

When the car switched to LPG the engine light comes on (and flashes) and the car judders badly under any throttle. When idling the car also has a 'shake'.

If you switch back to petrol the poor performance continues.

If you restart the car on petrol the engine light dissappears and the car runs fine - until you attempt to switch to LPG.

Any ideas?

I will likely take it to a garage (unless there is something obvious I can do) - but be good to know what its likely to be so I have an idea of what they are talking about and whats needed to rectify.

Also any recommendations of LPG garages that work with BRC close to Bath would be appreciated.

Sounds like a cylinder shutdown due to misfire detection.
Could be a duff LPG injector, ECU, plug fallen off etc.
Given the wet weather, just as likely to be ignition, tracking at spark plug etc. (yes I did hear the its-fine-on-petrol part)

I see your local - do you work with BRC kit?

I did have a problem a while back with a duff injector plug - I'll give it a wiggle!

worked okay until a full tank refill yesterday hmmm

I'd be thinking a bad batch of fuel, maybe coincidence maybe not, but worth a call to the garage to see if any other complaints

Nope, tank filled to ensure it was not misreading and actually empty - fault started before I filled it.

Yes, we'll look at BRC. Certainly worth having a connector waggle first.

Fixed a BRC FLY system yesterday, intermittent problem, would sometimes switch over to gas normally, sometimes would cut out, could simply cut out and stall when running on gas at any time. Checked solenoids, sensors, etc, no problems found despite waddling connectors, nothing obviously wrong according to ECU readings and no spurious readings. Then I noted that when it refused to run on gas the gas injectors didn't even attempt to pulse. Checked the gas injector wiring all the way back to the ECU. Problem turned out to be simply bad connections on two pins on the ECU multi-plug. The two pins were: looking at ECU from top and connector block facing away, the top and bottom pins, 5 columns left from furthest right on the left hand block. It should be noted this will likely only apply to the FLY plug n drive BRC system.

Not saying you have a bad connection or wiring etc, don't even know which BRC system you have and the problem I found is very unusual.

I agree with Rosko's points and advise you to visit him for a proper diagnostic.

I had an almost identical problem 2 weeks ago on my 530i. Turns out it was a small air leak, very common apparently - the induction hose splits where it tees off for the idle valve. Try spraying various hoses etc with brake cleaner - it should pick up when you hit the leak.
