Getting added to UKLPG/Drive LPG register
Getting added to UKLPG/Drive LPG register
Hi all.
My new insurance company has asked for a UKLPG approval certificate for a conversion i had done in March 2013. The problem is I don't have one as the conversion centre I used isn't part of the UKLPG scheme. I now have 14 days to get it added. Is it just a case of me contacting my local UKLPG centre and asking them to check it over? Also, will they check over systems they don't actually install? My car has a Stag kit and the local place to me, according to the drive lpg website, only appears to install BRC and only services BRC and Pharos.
I'm in Preston, Lancashire if anyone can advise me further on this.
Thanks.
Rik.

Ask 'em. They can choose to inspect any brand; equally, they're not obliged to inspect outsiders at all. Usual charge is in th £80 -£100 league.

Thanks. Do you have any idea how long the inspection usually takes?
Re: Getting added to UKLPG/Drive LPG register
If it's done properly, a couple of hours. That's what you're paying for, a couple of hours labour for a skilled and qualified worker. If they find anything that doesn't comply, they will obviously charge you extra to put it right.

Well yes, I would obviously like it done properly. I'll give the local place a call tomorrow and see if they can fit me in soon. I hope they can as the new insurance company are the ones asking. Admiral didn't care about UKLPG as long as I could provide an invoice for the garage that did the work (profess).Gilbertd wrote:If it's done properly, a couple of hours. You'll have to update us on if it passes or if it fails what it fails on, i've heard profess have been refused approval for uklpg because there work isn't up to scratch so would be good to hear back.carguy143 wrote:Well yes, I would obviously like it done properly. Re: Getting added to UKLPG/Drive LPG register
I certainly will. It seems like a lot of LPG fitters have a thing against profess. I spoke to one about getting it certified. He agreed to look at it but only after asking a load of questions about who fitted it, why it wasn't registered and basically telling me it may fail on pretty much everything and could cost more to bring it up to standard than it would have done to get a conversion off them in the first place. I know they're a business and want to make sure they're putting their name against something sound but this guy sounded a little OTT.sijones wrote:You'll have to update us on if it passes or if it fails what it fails on, i've heard profess have been refused approval for uklpg because there work isn't up to scratch so would be good to hear back.carguy143 wrote:Well yes, I would obviously like it done properly. Re: Getting added to UKLPG/Drive LPG register
The issue is that the car can be inspected by UKLPG and the inspector you use will want to make sure that it will pass should that happen as it would be a strike against them. The inspection does need to be quite in depth to make sure all the parts are of the correct spec and type etc.
I think the point they were making is that by the time you add in the cost of inspection the savings by going to somewhere like Profess can be lost and even cost more when remedial work has to be done

Re: Getting added to UKLPG/Drive LPG register
The sort of thing that a done-in-a-day conversion will fail on is things like the filler installation. The Code of Practice against which the car is inspected says that the filler must be mounted in such a way that the filler remains attached to the car and the break off on the hose breaks if you were to drive off with a filler still attached. A lot of installers will put the filler in a plastic bumper which is fine but only as long as there is a steel bracket behind it attaching it to the structure of the car and not just relying on the filler being attached to the plastic. If you've got a steel bracket behind the bumper then that's one thing you won't fail on but I would suspect you haven't as it's something that would take time to fabricate as no two cars are going to be alike.

Re: Getting added to UKLPG/Drive LPG register
Yeah i can understand that. I just don't want to be taken for a ride, if you know what i mean. If something genuinely needs fixing then fair enough.classicswede wrote:The issue is that the car can be inspected by UKLPG and the inspector you use will want to make sure that it will pass should that happen as it would be a strike against them. Thanks for all the help and advice on this one. This is ongoing and I will update accordingly once the issue is resolved.
Rik.
Re: Getting added to UKLPG/Drive LPG register
UPDATE: I've just spoken to Profess who are going to take the car to be inspected and added to the UKLPG register.
Re: Getting added to UKLPG/Drive LPG register
Well that was easy. I took the car back to Profess for a quick checkup, and then I took the car on to a local (to them) garage. It's now on the UK LPG register and didn't need any alterations in order to do so either. I guess this means that Profess' work is up to standard after all.

It may mean it's up to spec, or it may mean they have a "cosy relationship" with the other outfit. Either way, you've got the "bit of paper"* you need to keep some box ticker happy.

Re: Getting added to UKLPG/Drive LPG register
Yes I am as I drove the car to the other garage myself after Profess checked it over. I've had no issues with Profess whatsoever. I'm following the other thread very closely though. I also took the liberty of checking the drive LPG register for myself, too.

Hi Rik, I may have the same problem too when I change insurance company. How much did the other garage charge you to do the check.
Thanks Pat
Thanks Pat
Re: Re: Getting added to UKLPG/Drive LPG register
From memory, about £80. Speak to profess if you're worried about it. I seem to remember them doing your 75 if I'm not mistaken.patnut wrote:Hi Rik, I may have the same problem too when I change insurance company. How much did the other garage charge you to do the check.
