Opinions on KME multipoint systems, and MLJ in Southampton

#1 Post by Sammyboy72 »

I've just bought myself a rather lovely 4.0 Jaguar XJ6 Sport. This is going to cover a lot of miles for my job, so it seems like fitting gas is worthwhile. Should pay off in 8 months just on my commuting, never mind the very long work trips I sometimes have to do; in fact, in cost equivalent terms, it looks like I'll be able to fuel it for what I currently spend on my 1.0 Hijet!

Anyway, the most local option to me is MLJ Services in Southampton, where I live. Their website quotes a pretty reasonable £1050 all inclusive for a KME multipoint system with two years warranty. I'm a total n00b in this area; is KME to be trusted, or avoided? I've found only one reference on this site to MLJ, and it was very positive, but I also wondered if anyone else has used them? Here's a link to the car I bought, for those who like to look at such things :)

Not sure if the KME would be up to the power output, you don't want it switching back to petrol when you floor it. No doubt someone more convsersant with the system will be able to tell you. They convert well though. A friend had a 1996 4.0 litre XJ6, although not a Sport his was the LWB version, on gas and it was still going strong at 330,000 miles when he sold it. He now runs a later 4.2 Supercharged on gas instead.

I'm expecting it to manage starship mileage, which is why I went for one in really good shape. TBH, I won't be flooring it much, and if I do, switching to petrol might not be an issue. The way I drive, and where I want the economy, is at a steady speed on cruise control on the motorway. It'll be fun to give it a bootful sometimes, but if I'm going to do that, I probably shouldn't complain about consumption at those times!

That's one way of looking at it but my way of looking at it is that if you are going to be causing it to drop to single figure consumption, I'd rather be doing single figures at around 72p a litre than at £1.40 a litre. and I can get my Range Rover down into single figures if I choose (I still haven't worked out how you can get something weighing 2.3 tonnes to move that fast though).

I guess it's a question of weighing it up. If a system that would keep me on gas when I booted it was going to cost an extra £600, then I doubt my very modest amount of "booting it" would add up to the £600 for a very long time. Are we talking about potentially needing to spend more on a system?

The KME Gold reducer is rated for engines up to 320 bhp so would probably be up to the job (although I'm not sure of the actual power output of your engine) and costs only a tenner more than the lower rated KME Silver.

I seem to remember a discussion where the KME got some criticism for not being as stable as it could be. You'll need to wait for Tubbs, Rossko, Classicswede or one of the other professional installers on here to pop up.

245 Bhp, or would have been when new (probably a little down after 116,000 miles). I don't even collect the car til March 6th, and I've got to sell a few things to pay for the conversion, so there's plenty of opportunity for people to give me the benefit of their expertise; I couldn't make a snap decision if I wanted to!

The KME system is fine, but what injectors are being offered? I suspect the price you have mentioned £1050 will be for a 4 cylinder conversion?

Some of teh KME reducers suffered with the shut off sticking resulting in gradual pressure loss. It has now had a modification to cure the problem.

Personally I ran a kme system on 3 different cars, it was the same kit, I just soldered up the nozzles and re drilled them. It went with the last one. It was ok. It needed regular fiddling with as the reducer tended to drift.
I wasn't overly impressed. But it did the job. None of them where any kind of powerful motors though !

Looking at the site I suspect they are here today gone tomorrow installers we see all to often. I suspect it will be a KME electronics with valtek injectors and noce cheap vapouriser job.

Ok, so some questions for me to ask. Any recommendations of a better system or indeed a known quality installer in my area?

The KME or AFC system are both great systems. The touble is some installers combine the KME elecronics with poor quality injectors and vapouriser. If you have the KME vaporiser and magic injectors or better still hana then that is a system I would be happy to fit.

The installer is the big question mark here. That tank shows someone with no idea, the other photos are with BRC and I suspect might not be their own work.

Have you looked at any other installers if so who and with what system?

At the end of the day, you've just bought yourself a very nice car which I assume you intend keeping for some time. In that case, you'd be best getting the best install possible done on it and go on quality rather than price or locality.

Well, I agree, but at the moment, I'm getting more advice about what I shouldn't do/buy than what I should. Who/what do you guys recommend? I do plan to keep the car; they go to starship mileages, and if I can make the running affordable, I'll love it, but there isn't unlimited money available. I can spend more than MLJ are quoting, but I don't want to do so without knowing I'm getting quality kit from a quality installer, and I can't spend £2000.

I only charge £1250 for a 6 cylinder, good quailty italian system with UKLPGA registration all inclusive. So my advice is shop about a bit. There are some good installers out there. And we dont all charge the earth you know :D

Wasn't suggesting you did! It was more that people were implying that the price I was looking at was too cheap, without giving me any guidance as to what I ought to be looking to pay :) Shame you're way up in the Midlands, Tubbs.
