Fill rate

One of the known down-sides of LPG is the increased time it takes to refuel compared with unleaded.
But how long?
I've been timing the flow rate (nothing better to do for 5 minutes standing with my hand on a button!!!).
Sometimes it is as low as 7 litres a minute, other times as high as 14 litres a minute and this is all at my local independent LPG supplier. The large petrol stations (Asda, Esso etc) appear to be higher at about 15 - 18 litres per minute.

This all means my refuel takes between 4 and 8 minutes (56 litres to full).

It seems to vary (longer when it's freezing cold with horizontal rain, or at least it feels that way) but I've never timed it. I know a single hole tank doesn't fill as fast as a 4 hole tank and the Texaco station just outside the docks in Calais seems to have the slowest pump in the world. My local Flogas depot and the nearest main filling station to me (A1(M) services at Peterborough) seem to take about the same time.

Mate, you have far too much time on your hands surely you could spend the time thinking about work or something, what you are having for tea, where you fancy going on your holidays, checking your favourite LPG based discussion forum on your phone ?
I cant honestly say its ever crossed my mind ! Personally i hardly ever use more than the one country wide pump down the road. And that seems pretty quick. I have noticed some take a bit longer than others. But now you mention it i probably will start thinking about the flow rate, thanks for that !

There are things that can be done to improve flow rate slightly but there is not much you can do about a slow pump.

My advice is spend that time working how much you are saving on every fill

Earlier on I was getting about 0.2 litres a minute - until the chap filling a jag the other side had finished. Shell services at the A50/A38 junction - it's not unusual for it to be REALLLLLY slow, but today was the worst ever, and if you take your finger off the button, they won't reset it until you've paid for the 17p worth....

I had it once, in the end it was filler, little spring inside was wrong way round and ball wasn't opening fully.You could get rid of it all together I suppose, but you'll end up with pipe full of gas at the end of filling.
