'97 XJR Conversion

#1 Post by Guffer »

I am about to embark on converting my XJR. I posted some while ago about this and finally found one. This is the old XJR6, the last of the 6 in-line supercharged jags. I kept away from S-Types and X-Types due to the soft valve seat issues I have heard so much about.

I have a STAG kit rated to 320hp, with the engine rated at 321hp I am cutting it very fine but I think that if I set it to switch back to petrol at 3 or 3.5k it should not be too much of a problem (I hope) I can always upgrade the vap if needs be.

I need a tank though and at the moment Tinley seem to be the best priced currently unless anyone knows of a cheaper source? I am looking at a 650x270mm as I dont want to risk getting a tank that it too big for the spare wheel well. 720mm seems just a little tight......

Bit of light reading for you ! Its a v8 one, the v6 is far easier, got a bit more room under the bonnet. But worth a read and see what conclusions he drew about the conversion.

What injectors and reducer did you get with the kit Guffer?

But he's got a straight 6, completely different and far simpler again as it's the last incarnation of the old XJ engine.

Same shell.

720 fits with fairly mild persuasion. 270 will lift the boot floor. Stako valve boxes stick up above tank level further still; I was annoyed by this!

S/H tank off fleabay? Plenty of P38s with compatible tanks heading to the wrecker at the minute...

Don't for heaven's sake run any pipes under the boot floor though! Ground clearance is minimal on these vehicles and worse still with 120 kg of LPG and tank in the boot. The vent pipe stub installed on that Daimler has ground down to 1/2" since installation; any pipework that went from the centre of a donut type tank, through the boot floor, then along the underside of the boot floor, would be extremely vulnerable.

The reducer is the KME gold vap, not sure about the injectors, I'll have to check, but they are more than sufficient for a 3.2 and more.

That's good advice. I have seen a 720/230 at a decent price. At 80% it'll hold 58 litres which is plenty for me.

So instead of going through the floor you are saying I should go through the side of the wheel well?

They are Motogas make, 3 injectors on the same rail. Worked well in the car I used to have the kit on.

Likely they'll be OK, just flow rate I'm thinking about.. Each cylinder is 530cc and the engine is supercharged, so will need to flow more than for a normally aspirated 530cc cylinder. Some injectors wouldn't be up to it even with largest nozzle size and highest pressure that they'd work OK with.

Yes it is a concern of mine. I am acutely aware that the kit I have won't be quite up to the job but I'll stuck and see. If not then I'll just have to upgrade those bits which cant keep up.
