Jeep XJ petrol pump

Hi my Jeep stopped going the other day engine will not fire at all the chap at my local garage is looking at it and thinks it may be the petrol pump he says that it is buzzing but no petrol is coming out.

If the problem is the Petrol pump how dose he get to it and will it be the standard Jeep pump that was used failing that any other suggestions would be appreciated.

All that I can tell you is it is a 2000/1 Jeep Cherokee XJ 4ltr auto it was converted in about 2003 and both petrol and gas tanks are underneath at the back with a steel plate/guard over the top of it the installer was Lloyd Ash I would assume that it has the Tinley Tech tanks but I have no documents to say what the tanks are.

The replacment petrol tank use the original fuel pump and sender units. Treat exactly the same as original

If you can't easily get at the original petrol pump you can fit an external one in the feed pipe from tank to engine. Those as fitted to a fuel injected Jag XJ6 or XJ12 work extremely well, it'll just suck petrol through the original in-tank pump.

... not if the root of the problem is clag in the strainer. I have once encountered an aftermarket tank (on a Jeep) that had been painted on the inside, you can guess the rest.

Sounds like the Jeep may be fitted with a piggyback tank, the petrol and gas cylinders are strapped together and need to be dropped as a unit. This may frighten a garage unused to LPG, but isn't that difficult.

Thanks all but I have decided that I have had enough of it if you can do the work yourself that is one thing but having to pay other people to do it I am going to take some of the good parts off it wheels tyres and the some of the lpg system and scrap it as it needs the brake pipes doing I could end up spending £500 on only to sell it for £800 what is the point.

I only pay £18 for a 25 foot roll of copper/nickel brake pipe and that's enough to do a whole car! Where did £500 come from?

The fuel pump on the later mk2 xj's are located in the top of the tank, im not sure but there maybe a hatch in the boot floor under the carpet to allow for access to the pump without having to drop the tank/s Mine is a mk1 so the pump is in the front of the tank so no hatch, the duel fuel mini petrol tanks generally have the pump fitted in the top for the mk1 and 2 as there is no room for the pump/sender externals and an lpg tank to fit into the same space, the jeep fuel pumps are pretty bullet proof and very rarely fail although they have been known to fail if the tank is allowed to run pretty dry when running on lpg as they run even when the lpg is being used but usually they seize up solid so no buzzing.

It is some times possible to lift the carpet and carefully cut a access hole in the boot floor. This lets you remove the pump for inspection/replacement. Then screw a plate over the hole. This will some times be done when the tank is installed(I tend to do this while the tanks are out, just in case) I have seen a fair few off the pumps go but normally, as said above, its due to low fuel.

Absolutely shocking !! I discovered this whilst breaking my ZJ I bought for donor parts for my XJ ... never seen anything so badly done for a long time, how the person who I bought it off was expecting it to pass an mot let alone a lpg inspection I will never know.
