Hi everyone, I'm new to LPG, I'm looking at getting a 4.4 Range Rover, I've had one before although was petrol only!! and I don't want to go for the wheezing, slow TD6 with the gearbox made of chocolate so a V8 with a gas conversion it is this time!!.
There are a few that are already converted but I've seen one I really like, colour, mileage, spec wise that seems good value but hasn't been converted.
I just wondered if anyone could reccomend a fitter in the SE (I'm based in Surrey) that does a good job and fits a good system, I spoke to one place today that quoted about £1700 for a Stag system fully fitted, does that seem about right or a bit expensive?, also is a Stag ok on one of these?.
Obviously I don't mind paying to get a good job done but would like to find the right mix of value and decent workmanship if possible, any advice and reccomendations most welcome.

Be sure to get a good tune on it, a friend of mine is busy swapping the 4.4 in his D3 because the LPG tune that was too lean ruined the heads...

I think the Discos have the later Jaguar engine which isn't so good with LPG, btw good choice with the Classic 300 Tdi, I used to have one and still regret selling it now, their really rare now.
Re: Range Rover 4.4 Vogue(BMW engine) conversion in SE
You're right, the Disco 3 (and Range Rover Sport) uses the Ford engine which is a bit weak in the head department anyway. Quite how you can get an LPG system to run lean I'm not sure as it slaves off the petrol ECU and the lambda outputs will richen it up to correct. You'd have the MIL on constantly though. Unless the system installed was under specced and not up to the job in the first place. Even then, the MIL would still be on constantly so you should know something isn't right. If an installer tells you it is normal, walk away, it isn't.
Stag only make the controller not the important bits, the reducer/vaporiser and injectors. So if somebody tells you they would fit a Stag system you need to know what other components they intend fitting. £1700 may be expensive maybe not, depends if that is all in or plus VAT. Avoid anyone that tells you they will do the conversion in a day. There are installers that will do it but you won't be getting good workmanship. A decent conversion should take at least 4 days to do it properly. While it's nice to get it done locally, you may find that if you travel a bit and get it done properly, the distance from the installer is irrelevant as you won't need to go back anyway.
A Classic with a diesel?? No, a Classic should have a V8 (so should any Rangie for that matter).

Thanks Gilbert,
The place I called Was Arun? Autogas in Littlehampton, the phone diverted to them after calling Capital Autogas in New Malden, Surrey, apparantly they have gone out of business.
From what I've read the 4.4 BMW engine makes a good conversion to LPG, and a lot of people say to go with either Prins or BRC, Arun also said they would need the car for a few days, they said ideally drop it off on a monday and pick it up on a friday which wouldn't be the end of the world for me as I could get the train home and have use of another car.
Working it out at about 15 MPG and 12k a year the conversion should pay for itself in just over a year, which would be handy as I plan on keepig the car at least 3.
I disagree about the Classic Tdi, I found it a good engine-although a little slow, I think my experience of the V8 in the Classic was soured by buying a complete dog of one a few years ago, I'm sure a good one is good though.
Agree about Rangies being best as V8s, sadly my budget doesn't allow the one I want to have TD in front of the V8 though

I think payback in 12k miles is more than a bit optimistic - more like double that for a proppah job with decent tank etc.
