Re: How far do you get with LPG? eg. How many miles for £10
Hello all and SnoozyBmw
My car is 1998 , 140k with history ,it has been well looked after.....
One of the reason why ppl convert big cars is that they have the comfort and economy , i bought this car already converted so i sould be saving straight away ?
Any idea's ?
Kind Regards

Between 350 and 380 miles per 38 litre tank (about 60mpg winter, 65 mpg summer) so approx 130 miles to £10.
Car: 2004 Prius hybrid
Next project is to make it a plug-in so I always have a full battery every morning (electricity costs about 8p/litre when compared with petrol).
LPG system is a nasty but very reliable early AC Stag which I wouldn't have again as it can't cope with zero rpm signal running and keeps switching off when the engine is off.

Hi I can understand the need for the question if you are new to LPG, I had a vectra c on lpg on a full tank it would do around 278 miles, which worked out at about 6.5 miles to a litre of lpg, which in turn meant that the car on petrol would do about 35 miles to a gallon and on gas the mileage would be a shade over 60 miles in petrol costs I hope that is clear
now the Vectra had a gas system as fitted to by Vauxhall and believe me it used hardly any petrol as the gas cut in very soon after starting, this is not the case with the modern systems on offer today and is very important if you want to get a very accurate picture of what it will cost,no lpg converter mentions this, some of the new systems take at least a mile or more to change onto gas, this may not sound far but on choke you will use petrol and the price it is now it has to be included in the maths, against this one would expect the new systems to give a little more mileage on gas say 7 miles to a litre of gas which will to some extent cover the petrol cost, also if you are thinking of getting a conversion try for the largest tank you can get into your boot even if the tank is slightly proud of the boot floor as 278 miles in the vectra seemed to fly by,I am having my new car changed over and will be getting a 65 litre tank which should be good for 400 miles at least, there are more stations with lpg,and with the downloads to satnavs now you should never run out, also a big percentage of car drivers use the same routes on a daily basis so soon know where to fill up.
Re: How far do you get with LPG? eg. How many miles for £10
that depends on the car and how the software is setup, mine is set to changeover at 35 degrees around this time of year it takes about a mile (couple of minutes of driving), my wifes car after the same distance is at near optimum operating temperature (65 degrees) so she would use even less petrol than me.zipdip wrote:now the Vectra had a gas system as fitted to by Vauxhall and believe me it used hardly any petrol as the gas cut in very soon after starting, this is not the case with the modern systems on offer today
so thats an 80 litre tank, minimum 400 miles equal 27.9 mpg, to average 30mpg you would need to do 433 miler per tank.zipdip wrote:I am having my new car changed over and will be getting a 65 litre tank which should be good for 400 miles at least

In my recently converted BMW 745i I'm getting 24mpg on petrol, and my spreadsheet I've been using to predict that has been pretty accurate says I can do 63 miles on £10.
Not bad at all for such a big powerful car, and LPG being 66.9p from morrisons in Newcastle ^^

Re: How far do you get with LPG? eg. How many miles for £10
If you run a old style conversion, like the one fitted to Vectra C cars by vauxhall you will find that the amount of time you are on petrol even in winter is very short, but the new conversions like BRC or Prins or any of the other top brands will take longer on petrol before going onto gas,its to do with the size of the regulator I think,so you will have to factor in the extra petrol being used over a year to get a accurate cost, but the advantage of the new conversions is that they are more fuel efficient, not by a great deal, but say you have a vectra c you would get about 6 to 6.5 miles to a litre of gas with a new conversion on a similar car doing about 35 miles to a gallon of petrol you will get 7 to 7.5 to a litre of gas not much more but it all adds up .
People posting on this topic sometimes get themselves very muddled with figures, everybody who gets there petrol car changed to gas will know how much mileage there car will do on petrol,no matter if it is a big merc or a focus, when you change it to gas you have to run of the trip and fill the tank up and if you can use the same garage to fill the tank again, this will give you what the car is doing to a litre of gas forget the price it go's up and down just like petrol,a basic saving would be if you do 12000 miles a year you would save about £800 using gas,the more mileage you do the more you save, people have touched on the one main thing you need when changing to gas and that is fit as large a tank as you can, most of the medium cars like Mondeo Citroen C5,and the like you should be able to fit a 65 litre tank,it may be a little proud of the boot floor but foam underlay will even out the boot floor ,the other advantage of these new conversions is you will not notice any loss of power as long as it is fitted well.

I got a 1991 Discovery 3.5 V8 and it'll do approx 25 miles to £10 @ 79.9p/l. Obviously depends how I drive as can get more if I drive like a snail.

But that's only 13mpg!!! The Essex may be a pretty geriatric lump but the Scimitar isn't exactly heavy. I'm doing better than that with a 4 litre V8 in 2.3 tonnes of Range Rover with the aerodynamics of a small warehouse.

Yes I know. Just finished another tank and the figures are still the same. New engine (albeit fast road) and New open loop kit.
To be fair it was pretty rubbish on petrol but rather than try to diagnose petrol issues I thought I 'd convert then pursue..
I'm now thinking of fitting a closed loop to it.

Volvo 240 with open loop and mixer:
27 mpg gas = about 42 mpg petrol equivalent.
About 70 miles for £10.

Re: How far do you get with LPG? eg. How many miles for £10
When my lpg system was working OK I drove from Oxford to Gatwick airport then to Heathrow - 129 miles I think refilled gas at almost 80p per litre and it cost me £21 (left Oxford with full lpg tank)
Lexus LS400 1998 4.0 V8 92,000 miles.
On my Lexus gs300 1998 3.0 straight six (BRC system) I would often get 120 miles from Oxford to Stafford service on M6 for £20 (car had done 186,000 miles) too ......
P.S my omvl on lexus ls400 v8 setup is playing up, I have started a help topic - any help / advice will be much appreciated.

Re: How far do you get with LPG? eg. How many miles for £10
I can get 140 miles on LPG provided I am on a steady run -
Otherwise on a 'Good' Day I get 25 runs!
(this is 1 mile at a time - 1/4 mile down at full throttle and then 3/4 of a mile back) The issue is that my Nitrous costs a LOT more than the LPG I use! So counting this in I get 5 runs for my £10
Oh but it is definitely worth the £10
Um forgot to say what its on - a 1989 Skoda Rapid with a 1.3 Skoda Engine, Saab Turbo and Wizards Nitrous kit.
It runs the 1/4 in 14 seconds.
