Plug change due, which ones? Brisk maybe?
Plug change due, which ones? Brisk maybe?
Hi,
I had a spark plug blow out of the engine the other day so it is going in on Friday to be re-threaded. I obviously checked the plugs & they could do with changing + the one that blew out is damaged anyway. So time for some new plugs, the plugs that were fitted were Audi Bosh super 4 & I was just going to replace with the same but decided to have a look about. The car is an Audi 4.2 V8 S6 & the Bosh super 4 were fitted when I bought it.
I found these http://www.lpg-kits.com/plugsAudi.ht After reading the info they say that iridium plugs are no good for LPG? Also you need to re-tune your LPG. After reading this I contacted Prins the make of my kit & they said yes to these plugs & directed me to one of their installers for a re-tune. I then found this while goggling the Brisk plugs. http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=129594 The chap in the post is saying that the single prong plugs are best & avoid multi prong plugs with the other people explaining how they don't work for LPG......................my Bosh Super 4 (which are multi prong) have been in since I bought the car & have gave no problem I am aware of.
So what to buy, if I can buy a better plug for LPG then I will. Is that single prong, multi prong, iridium, silver tipped or what?

Single prong are field adjustable for gap, multi prong aren't. That was sometimes helpful for older cars with marginal ignition systems that struggled with LPG. It's irrelevant for modern COP systems with lots of wallop.
If what you had before worked okay, you can safely ignore saloon bar advice and sales blurbs... that would include retuning specifically for plugs (although of course it might be due as routine service anyway)

Re: Plug change due, which ones? Brisk maybe?
The brisk plugs are good IN THE CORRECT APPLICATION, namely single point systems. Not much need for them on multipoint / injection systems. As they are less likely to have issues with a stray spark.
Re: Plug change due, which ones? Brisk maybe?
What plugs are recommended for my car then? I've looked at the NGK Iridium Spark Plugs & the Bosch Platinum-Iridium Fusion http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDI-S6-4-2-A ... 1c25a026e6 I like the fact that I don't have to mess with the plug gap etc.

Have a look here http://www.sparkplugs.co.uk/pages/prici ... ns-ccp.htm and see what plugs are recommended, you may get a standard and Iridium option. Personally I prefer Iridium plugs as they last 3 or 4 times longer than standard.

Re: Plug change due, which ones? Brisk maybe?
According to sparkplugs.co.uk I should be using this plug NGK BKR6EQUP which is Platinum. It also seems to be a BMW spec plug when you Google it.
Edit: I have now gone onto the NGK website & the upgrade plug is the BKR6EIX & then one called LPG1 as the next upgrade. Have now got thoroughly confused with more searching, there are three plugs from NGK listed below.
NGK BKR6EIX (6418) around £5
NGK BKR6EIX-LPG (3356) around £10
NGK LPG1 (1496) around £16

All three of those are Iridium plugs. The only difference between the first two is that the LPG version may have a slightly smaller gap. The special NGK LPG plugs appear to be identical to standard Iridium plugs if you look at the specs of them on the NGK website. Personally, I'd go for the first on the list.

Re: Plug change due, which ones? Brisk maybe?
Hi for what its worth I put a set of Brisk DOR15LGS plugs in my Saab and after 1K was getting misfire replaced with Denso K20TT single prong and misfire was cured!! They may work on some cars but I wont be buying them again The Denso plugs were also half the price.

Ok, don't think I'll bother with the Brisk ones then. Just need to decide between the Bosch ir fusion or NGK BKR6EIX. If I go for the NGK they come pre gapped, what gap do I need for the Audi on LPG?

Re: Plug change due, which ones? Brisk maybe?
Unless the standard gap is huge, like over 1mm, leave them as they are. As has been said, it's a lot more critical on a single point than a multipoint system anyway.
