help I have a LSI Landi lpg system but can't turn it on!

Hi Guys,
I inherited a range rover 4.6 v8 from my best mate who sadly passed away, I am trying to get it all up together, been busy doing silly bits and things for mot, now all seems good I'd like to get it working on lpg, it has a lsi landi multi point kit fitted, looks to be all there, but there are 3 wires tucked in next to the gems ecu which look to be coming from the lpg ecu black green+black and red and white I think, they are going to nothing and I can't see where they came from, the button/guage never lights up or anything although the 2 fuses that go to the battery I assume for the lpg kit look fine, I don't know what anything is called on these systems and don't know where to start! my mate did take the car to a garage in devon and they said he needed something which if I remember wasn't much, but I can't remember what he said now, maybe these 3 wires are supposed to go to that?? the whole system is totally lifeless though, I'm in chichester if anyone local can help? I do know a fair bit about cars but nothing about lpg on cars, I'd love any advice, also is lsi landi a good reliable kit? and are spares still available or are they no longer trading??

On Italian kit red and white is usually ignition switched live. If it isn't connected that may be why it doesn't do anything, it doesn't know you've switched the ignition on. Landi is Italian but I believe Landi and Landi Renzo are different companies just to throw further confusion into the mix. I know that some Landi Renzo systems use the AEB manufactured ECU so Landi may well do too. Coincidentally, Zavoli are also Italian, use the AEB ECU and have a very useful installation manual in English that can be downloaded from http://www.zavoli.com/upload/manuali/en_file_7.pdf

There will be a dangly plug for to plug a laptop into ... usually on just a short cable from the gas ECU ... do you think that might be what you are looking at?

here are some pics of my system, all fuses look ok but no lights or anything on the guage, is there anything obvious missing??!!

This one must be the diagnostic plug as it's capped but does anyone know what should be on the 3 wires ??

yes mate found a blanked off plug by ecu that must be diagnostics? has 4 wires going to it, looks more likely,

Hi Richie,

Bottom right of picture 4 is the diagnostic connector.
Picture 2 shows the injector rail, the thick pipe coming from the side has a take off (the thin black pipe) for a gas pressure reading and then the same picture lower down you have the vacuum being tee'd (at the end of the pipe you can see the letters ITAL)
Could you follow these to their end and see where they go? they should go to the MAP/pressure sensor (the vacuum pipe will split to the LPG regulator and the other one should go to the MAP sensor)

Actually, I think at the bottom of picture 5 I can see the end of the pressure pipe from the rail that would have gone to the MAP/Pressure sensor, looks like those loose wires are the remaining tails from where the MAP sensor has been cut off.
I would guess it has been cut off and kept by someone who intended to search for a replacement unit and wanted the original to check against.
The wires have been cut after the connector though so if a replacement unit can be found then fitting it wont be a problem, I suspect the ignition feed has been disabled by the person who removed the MAP sensor to ensure the valves din't click open as the pressure reference pipe has been left open ended.

P.S Also looking at picture 5, I would say those 2 holes in the side of the ECU housing had a zip tie through them securing the MAP sensor.

looks like we have found the culprit then mate, but I have no idea what they have disconnected to switch it off as all wires seem connected apart from the map ones, yes I must admit when I saw the 2 holes it made me think,
now where would we get a map sensor? I tried ebay!!!!

Hi Richie,

Those are both AEB 025 map sensors, they work pretty much the same but have a standard 4 wire connector. I've never rigged one of those to run on a 3 wire setup so not actually sure how you could change the wiring to suit your system?

oh dear, any ideas of what might fit? and I still can't find what they have done to turn it off, the only wires that look cut are the 3 for map, would that disable it? thanks

I do not think it is possible. Three-wire sensors are differential types, reporting the difference between MAP and gas pressure. The later 4-wire types are two sensors in one box, reporting absolute MAP and pressure, and leaving the software to calculate the differential.

The old AEB Type 13 sensors are differential, but have a four-pin connector and for every one I've come across the fourth wire is also in the main loom, unused. That means you can upgrade to a Type 25 dual absolute sensor so long as you can also update the software to recognise and handle the new type of sensor. Just as well, as type 13 haven't been available as spares for many years.

I wonder if this beasty had something that pre-dates even Type 13?? I think you are going to need a proper LSI expert knowledge here.

The later AEB wiring colours are red/black for power (which is +5V I think), black for ground, yellow/red and orange/black for signals, though i don't know which is MAP and pressure.

oh dear it's way above me already!! looks like I'm pretty stuffed then if I was thinking of having a go myself as I wouldn't have a clue!
going to have to use the dreaded petrol as usual, and my car rekons i'm getting 11mpg, so not cheap, no wonder I never go anywhere!!!
