Dont recommend this installer

#1 Post by Ffr1burra »

Hi
I want to advise contributors and members of the problems I have had with my mercedes following conversion to lpg. My recommendation to you is never use Hytek. Following their installation I had untold problems including an insecure lpg tank, excessive drillings into my car chassis to locate the gas pipe, major damage to the existing wiring loom and electrical faults. Has anyone else had similar issues.

Good on you for warning people, however, just be careful how you word things. You wouldn't want to get stuck in some legal case.
Although the way you have described the workmanship, it sound like very bad job indeed.

If the installation is really bad, would it be worth contacting trading standards, fit for use etc?

Frustrating - have you approched them asking for a rectification?
Or have you solved it another way, and if so, how?
Any photos?

Its one thing offering advise John but the hard part is getting brainwashed customers to listen to it (factory trained / done in a day cheap cheap). Remember pay cheap pay twice their are no realy bad systems just bad installers

Well if that's the level of your advice, you haven't been missed.
There are plenty of us customers on this forum who've been along the one day/factory trained route and are more than happy with our 'once only' money's worth.
Just because someone has set up a production line system for installing LPG systems in one day doesn't make them a bad installer any more than one man spending 3 or 4 days to fit the same system for more money, doesn't make him a good installer.
No doubt that the specific installer mentioned in this thread is giving all LPG installers a bad name but don't tar everyone with the same brush.

Equally there are plenty that may have been initially until they find out that their system isn't quite as well installed as they thought. There's been no end of people over the years who put up with the MIL on all the time, put up with a lower level of performance when running on gas, put up with a car that switches to petrol when they floor it to overtake, etc because they think that is how all gas systems are.

As an engineer I would argue that no matter how many people you have working on the car it is impossible to do a perfect installation in a day. If you were only ever converting one particular model of car then maybe you could but when you are doing a different car every day it isn't possible to do it properly. Adequately maybe, but not properly.

Nobody was, there's been enough horror stories from other installers for them to warrant their own brush. Equally there's others that take a pride in their work and do a proper job. These are the ones that we need to promote and let the standard of workmanship from the others tell it's own story.

Let's face it, you get a car converted to save money and the difference between a proper job and a chucked in in a day job is usually no more than three or four hundred quid. You'll get that back in the first few tanks of fuel.

I'm not a professional (from the LPG point of view) but have converted/helped convert several Omega's with good results. There is a group of 4 of us that help out when we can and with us all working together we can just about do a conversion in a weekend, with a few bits of tidying left to finish (mainly hoovering the car etc) but it's a couple of long days! OK, we work to a very high standard and have been complimented by several different "professionals" who have done the inspections. I still find it hard to accept that an installation that meets my standards could be done in a day... After all, there's only so many people who can work on the car at the same time before getting in each other's way

That said, I'm sure there are people who can and perhaps my expectations are too high. I have only seen 1 "Professional" LPG conversion on an Omega that meets my standards... That took 5 days  I have, however, seen many that don't and had to make good other "professional" installations that were certified/on the register, just to get them up to COP 11 standards, never mind a standard I would be happy with!

Without wanting to stir up the age old discussion of UK LPG or not, I think the whole system would work much better if every installation had to be inspected by an independent body that only do inspections, no repairs/installations in any way. Much like the council run MOT stations  At least then there would be a level playing field for the safety aspect. Then it's just down to the fitter's pride as to how tidy he wants it to be

FWIW, my installation cost me no more than £900, fully fitted and certified. The one that I've seen and would say is acceptable was £2200 around 3-4 years ago  I'd DIY every time, not just from the price aspect but also the knowledge that it is done to my standards.

Just my 2p

so what you are saying is your conversions are perfect and everyone else does a sub standard job. I dare say if you took it to a couple of installers they would find something, that is just the nature of the beast.
Omegs'a are not difficult to do and as long as you don't put the nozzles in the top of the plenum (which i have seen so many times) they run a treat, Tanks are simple as there is plenty of room and access to be able to get everything in is good.
So basically what I am saying is if you can't get an Omega looking good and running correctly then you should go back to sitting behind a desk

when you say omegas there are many different models of them, some photos of your install would be nice to see, as tommo 2009 wrote they are not hard to get right........i dont agree with putting you behind a desk if your good at something just keep doing it the best you can.........

didn't mean lazydocker personally when I said about the desk. It was meant generically about anyone installing a system on an omega.
No matter which omega it is, they are all pretty simple.
