Stag4-Plus. No joy connecting with MotoGas USB interface

Hi folks,

New to LPG but getting to grips with it nicely. All connected up neat and tidily and no left over wires to worry about! Once warmed up, I can press the button and it clicks over and burbles to a stop - unsurprisingly as it' not been set up at all.

The problem is, I'm having massive issues trying to connect my laptop to the ECU to configure it.

I've tried EVERYTHING or so it seems and I'm at the end of my tether. Lost 12+ hours of my life checking through all the options, COM ports, trying to get the computer to recognise the drivers for the interface and it's just not having any of it! The only light at the end of the tunnel is that I read on another forum that someone solved all their problems by using a lap top running Vista - surely this can't be the only option I have left?!! So...

What am I doing wrong?

Appears in device manager as an unknown device, though the name comes up as Motogas USB interface. The software came with a pdf demonstrating how to install the USB drivers correctly but it doesn't ever work that way.

When the drivers are being loaded does it say your device is read to use or does it give an error?

You might either have the wrong drivers for the device or that motogas isn't compatible with stag, i'd work on the assumption that the device drivers ain't loading correctly at the moment as it should be reconised in device manager rather than showing unknown device.

Right click on the device -> update drivers -> don't connect to windows update -> install from a list or specific location -> choose don't search i will choose the driver to install -> have disk (button) -> navigate to driver folder and then ok everything, it should then load the driver, if it says this driver is not suitable for the device then it's up to you if you override it and say yes to try it anyway or try for a different driver.

No. As I said, it runs a quick MS-DOS style window, claims to be loading into a temp folder somewhere and then vanishes before you've had time to read it properly!

No error messages and no successful install messages either.

I've been through that process two dozen times and every which way I've tried it, the computer doesn't let me quite do what I'd like. Whenever I'm at the stage where I can manually tell it where to look it insists that it's only going to be satisfied with a .inf filename. The only one like that is the startup.inf which simple reads run the setup.exe - Talk about a brick wall!

I'll have a go at doing a print screen of my stages of progress to try and make things clearer...Back sometime this evening.

xp isn't mega-old so i'd imagine it should run it ok, is this the software your using?

The program itself seems perfectly good, though of course I've had little opportunity to do anything with it...

I know XP isn't at the cutting edge any more but are people actually considering it mega-old now?!

More often you'll find it's the other way round, LPG software runs on Windows 95, 98, 2000 but starts to get flakey the more modern you get. XP usually handles USB drivers reasonably well.

You mention COM ports. If you can get as far as configuring COM ports then the interface is working, but it isn't talking to your controller. There's also been mention on here of swapping the centre two pins around in the plug that goes to the ECU as the send and receive lines are different on the Stag unit to some others.

Sorry I didn't get around to doing any screen captures last night, went to the pub...and didn't leave for a while!!

Anyway, I've since had a reply from the people who supplied me with the system who have attached a piece of software which didn't appear on the original CD...it's loaded, and despite the fact that windows doesn't think it has an approved image (whatever that means), it appears to have actually done something...so I'm going to check it out and report back shortly.

My laptop/Stag 4 connection is pretty flaky unless my laptop battery is fully charged.
It's not always perfect even then but it usually connects eventually.

Pleased to report that the problem was simply not being supplied with the correct software!
Bloody annoying, but very glad it's all sorted now. Clicked a few options and set it running on the self learn programme and I'm over half way there, just got to get some assistance fine tuning it now.
