Getting LPG fitted in Poland........should I??

#1 Post by exrm193 »

My other half is from Poland. She has been speaking to her family out there and they are saying that if I drove out there and had my kit fitted, the savings would be huge....possibly half the price of a UK fitting.

I realise that the guarantee/warranty would be about as useful as Anne Franks drum kit, but should I go for it??

My only real question would be the connection for the filling nozzle??? Are they universal or would a Polish fitting differ from a UK fitting thereby making it impossible to fill up here??

Your thoughts please

Thanks

If you buy a continental adaptor and a uk bayonet and take it with you, get them to fit the uk bayonet and use the adaptor. Hey presto when you get back in the uk .. Sorted. But what do you see as cheap though. And a warranty is pretty important because all problems do seem to occur reasonably quickly with the kme a/g systems. Also what car is it ? They are ok on the smaller engines. Not so hot on the higher powered ones tbh. Personally I would go for an Italian system and get it fitted in the uk. 4 cylinder car £995 24 months warranty and full uk support. That's got to be cheaper than driving to Poland twice to get it sorted. Even if it's £600 quid ! The euro is strong against the pound so you need to do some hard maths including stuff like Chunnel/ferry fares and fuel costs.

Personally I would go for it. As Tubbs say's, get them to fit a UK filler and take an adapter with you so you can fill up over there. Presumably you would be going over anyway so the travel costs don't enter into the equation? If you combined it with a family visit you could get it fitted as soon as you arrive and then use the car as much as possible to let things settle so you could get it checked before you head back.

As with any conversion, ask your insurers what they need to see. They might want a UK inspection, another cost to factor in.

Even if you dismiss warranty, bear in mind you will have future servicing needs in UK. Whether DIY or getting someone to do it for you, see that the brand offered is supportable in the UK
A cautionary tale

I was asked to carry out an inspection on a Passat that had just been converted in Poland, I came up with more than 20 fitting faults, never seen anything like it. The owners thought they would save cash by having it converted when the went back to Poland on hols.
Be warned.

It's going on a Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7 Hemi on an 05 plate.
I've had a couple of quotes from UK fitters and I'm looking at £2500 inc VAT...OUCH :(

I take it you haven't had a Polish quote then yet? From the sounds of it, it will be quite a demanding installation in terms of the kit requirements. Will the kit they supply be up to the job? Have they done a similar vehicle before?

If it was a more run of the mill vehicle I might be inclined to take the chance but I would be reluctant to do it in this case. Too many horror stories about, which only serve to damage the reputation of LPG and potentially damage the long term prospects for the future of it as a fuel in this country.

Mate i would steer well clear tbh. All the polish systems are ok on smaller engines but i wouldn't have a go on an engine of that capacity. Get some more quotes, for example i would do it for £1600 all in. Now as i remember its a strange tank configuration quite a long thin gas tank.
But please note that this is a can bus car and requires a can bus gas ecu to cope with it. I presume your £2500 quote was on a prins system ? There are other more than capable systems on the market today, the polish kme, stag (ag) etc are ok on the right cars but they are not high output systems. You need a high output system.

I'd agree with the others. I don't suppose there's many cars like yours in Poland and you will almost certainly end up with an inadequate system.

I can do that for £1900 including a 230Litre tank in the back if thats what you want, price would be cheaper for a smaller tank.
Done a number of these vehicles.

PM me if you are interested.

I got mine fitted by Poles - in Cardiff, AC stag system
http://www.professautogas.co.uk/

Took them a while to get it right but has been best, and most adjustable system I have had.

It depends on how often you visit Poland, and is there someone who can work on this system in the UK. It would only take one unplanned trip to Poland to fix the system to undo all the savings you made.

On the same vehicle as the OP? Does it run on gas all the time or switch to petrol at high demands?

Any above ECU will cope with that car.... It's just a matter of right components(vaporiser mostly)...

No mine is a 2 litre turbo 250bhp, no never swiches back to petrol
Looks like they have done a conversion on the car you mention

Don't understand why you think Polish systems can't cope with larger/high output engines

It's not Polish systems so much as Polish installers. Virtually all of the cars converted over there are smaller engined, as that is what the majority drive. The only people you are likely to find running something like a Jeep are the local 'mafia' and they can afford to run on petrol. Over here we tend to convert to make big engined cars affordable to run so most installers are familiar with the larger engined vehicles, over there they think that if you can afford to buy a big car, you can afford to run it. So very few bigger engined cars get converted so the installers don't have the experience.

Hmmm.... well iv had my 2005 Subaru Impreza 300bhp converted by profess autogas using the stag system and it runs it no problem , and you dont get much more powerfull than that, so some things what people are saying about certain people or systems not up to the job may need to rethink

Gilbertd, you have no idea what you are talking about. Have you ever been there? Yes, we have small cars. And we have big cars with big engines. Don't insult me!

Yes, frequently, and I have yet to see a big engined car filling up with LPG. Lots of small engined cars, but no big ones, they are all filling up with petrol.
