LPG wont switch over, flashing lights, pic inside, Help!!

#1 Post by midge »

Hello, im having problems with my v8, it will start up on petrol then when it switch's to gas it will take one second before it switch's straight back to petrol, when it does this the controller lights flash, the 4 greens flash then the red then the greens then the red and so on, it will then not go on to lpg, i found if i restart the car eventually it will go over to the gas after maybe 10 restarts, i have no idea what the flashing lights mean, and i dont know what kit it is in the car, heres a pic of the controller

heres a pic of the controller with the petrol on and lights flashing

I'm in Reigate, is there someone i can see about sorting this out? any test's i can do?

I'll apologise first as I won't be much help. But this is to say that I have the same problem with my bmw m60 V8, it has the same switch and has a BIGAS GIS system.
The LPG ECU I currently have in the car has not been tuned and I am quite sure this is the reason for it switching back to petrol (its fairly obvious the LPG is VERY out of tune)

* First you need to find out what LPG system you have. Try to locate the LPG ECU, you can do this by following the 'extra' LPG wiring that may be dotted around your engine bay and tracing it back to an LPG ECU which usually looks like a two piece peanut butter sandwich but made out of aluminium and a big plug full of wires on one side.

* Once you know what make the LPG ECU is, you can put the info on here and see if anyone can direct you to the nearest tuner (or you can buy the lead and software off eBay for about £20)

OR

* You could after finding the name of your LPG ECU, get on to yell.com and start ringing LPG installers from nearest to farthest and asking if they tune the ECU that you have.

The switch is a standard AEB one so the system will almost certainly be AEB based. In other words it could be AEB, OMVL, Romano, Zavoli, etc as they all use an AEB controller. I've never come across the sequence of flashes you have, which is obviously an error code that is telling you something, but I'm only really conversant with the AEB based single point systems, not injection. Anyone that knows AEB systems should know what the flashes mean.

It's standard behaviour to indicate "tank empty"

it was doing it before and after i put £20 lpg in there, indicates 2 green lights worth lpg in the tank, also it doesnt need tuning as when its finally on the gas it runs perfect!

It thinks the tank is empty because it doesn't see enough gas pressure when it expects it.
If it works after a few goes, you might suspect gummed up solenoid (most likely the front one) or vaporiser.

You could do it yourself, if you phone Tinley Tech and ask their advice they will sell you the parts. It will be the same advice Rossko gave you. Then you can start swapping parts till it works. It's always hit and miss when you diy it but you will get there in the end and learn a lot. It's cheaper in the long run to swap like with like parts I think instead of different makes.
With a thirsty V8 it's probably cheaper in the long run to have a pro look at it. The time you take to fix it means petrol is being used. Good luck.

Gummed up front solenoid was the problem on mine when I had these symptoms so +1 for what Rossko says :D

mine is doing the same but they tell me its a valve issue rather than solenoid

they tested both front and rear solenoids both fine

be interesting to find out the exact problem
