I have a Ford ST 170 converted which runs great. The converter fitted a pint size bottle for two stroke oil which is fed into the injecters every 6 seconds and runs out each week.

He said that he was unsure if this was really needed as Ford do a Mondeo with a similar engine that is designed for LPG and doesn't need this modification.

I have written to ford uk but with no response.

Can any one advise me if this is required as it is a pain and may be doing more harm than good.

The engine uses variable valve timings.

Thanks

Dave

I have never heard of this before, but i do know zetec engines mainly the older ones have valve probs when run on LPG so is prob to do with that?

nothing to do with problem but i would be intrested in your car if you ever put up for sale, I like the st170's. email:cold@blueyonder.co.uk

you are feeding 2 stroke oil into a modern 4 stroke engine?! are you mad?!
Here are 3 reasons not to.

1, 2 stroke oil six quid a litre.

2, the catalytic convertor that you are likely to quickly ruin; another 300+ quid?

3, some extremly antisocial tailpipe emmisions.

Mark,

here are 3 reasons why the installer and owner are anything but 'Mad'.

1. Fords are well known for soft valves and resulting Valve Seat Recesssion (VSR) which can be slowed down by upper cylinder lubricant. The installer was wise to take this precaution.

2. Fluids such as those being sold to to this job under proprietary names cost more like £12 a litre and do no more (maybe less) than two stroke oil will do. £6 a litre depends on where you buy your 2ST oil and how much you buy at a time. It is possible to buy a Gallon for £6.

3. Properly managed injection of tiny amounts of upper cylinder lubricant will have the desired effect of reducing VRS but will not harm the catalytic converter. Emissions will be likewise unaffected. Even if so, and the vehicle's cat. was suffering, the addition of 2ST fumes produced would be no different to the fumes produced by proprietary 'Valve Saving Fluids' and no match for the national fleet of Strimmers, Chainsaws and Boat engines that launch themselves on the envoironment every Spring...

Ever seen a chainsaw getting an MOT?

Regards

Steve

www.go-lpg.co.uk

I would say keep using something-at least.
My Ford Maverick XLT, which has a Zetec engine needed new valve seats and valves 6000 miles after conversion - Ford put Gas Spec heads onto factory fitted Zetec Dual fuels such as the Focus and the Transit. I have been advised that Flashlube is an effective valve lubricant, but I'm not sure on what's involved in installing it

I'd say that you need to keep using the lubricant but would suggest that you're using too much. The instructions that came with my flashlube kit recommend using about 50ml per tank of fuel or thereabouts so unless you're doing serious mileage, a pint a week seems excessive?

I've been running LPG on a 54plate Honda V-tec for 2 yrs and 40k miles, with Valve saver from the off , as Hondas also suffer valve seat recession . My dripper bottle is set to deliver 1 drip every 5 seconds , the setting does drift off to less, so it has to be checked every few months . Over the 2 years , I'm on about my 4th ltr of oil. Mileage is mostly motorway 70+.
I've been warned off Zetec and LPG , by the 3 LPG fitters I know - due entirely to the inordinate valve seat wear suffered by these engines .

cant be very good instalers, i know a number of zetec's that have ben converted and run with no probsturunch wrote: I've been warned off Zetec and LPG , by the 3 LPG fitters I know - due entirely to the inordinate valve seat wear suffered by these engines .

i was also advised to install the flashlube kit on my Type R Civic 2004
im coming upto a year since install and no issues, car runs really well and ive used about 1 litre so far im using the JLM lube rather than flashlube
is 2 stroke the same idea then ?? ive got some left over from my lads motorbike could make use for it

Re: Ford ST 170
Would'nt it be great if we knew for sure that 2 stroke oil could be substituted for Flashlube which is £20 a bottle now minimum.
Re: Ford ST 170
Why do you think two-stroke oil might do any good at all? It's made for a different purpose. If you want to try any random oil, you could have a go with 3-in-1, or olive oil, or ...

Re: Ford ST 170
Until/unless we know what kind of oil is in a Flashlube bottle then almost any kind of oil might be a reasonable substitute for it. Although I'd not be immediately inclined to use baby oil in The Old Girl any time soonrossko wrote:Why do you think two-stroke oil might do any good at all? It's made for a different purpose. If I can't break it nobody can. Failures to date: Nil! ;)
Re: Ford ST 170
I have a 2002 1.6 zetec and I have had it installed. After 25k it failed and killed my valves anyway. I had a new head fitted with hardened value seats fitted and still use the flash lube valve saver. I was always Told by the garage who fitted it to keep an eye on it and make sure it drips about every 6 seconds too.
Re: Ford ST 170
That's the Zetec for you, valve seats marginally harder than butter.......
