discovery airbox

i've heard that an alternative to the plastic airbox found on discoverys, you can fit the round metal ones from either a range rover classic or an early/200 discovery...

my plastic airbox fitted to my 95 3.9 v8 discovery has a rather large crack in it from a lpg related blow back

has anyone else heard of or tried out this mod???

is it a straight swap or should it be modified in any way (cat flap)????

Or a K&N (other makes are available) type cone filter? Copes with blow backs better!

The other option I've heard of for protection is to fasten the airbox lid down with a bungee cord, so that it can lift off if a blow back occurs.

you need protection for the airflow meter, not just the airbox, a damaged airbox won't stop the car running and airlow meter may well do

I fitted one of the cylindrical ones to my Discovery after the plastic box was blown to bits. It worked really well and I secured it with a bungy cord. I have attached a picture.

The later Hotwire AFMs are more robust than the early flapper style - I suffered a few on a previous Disco with no AFM damage, although obviously better to protect it.

The little gauze thingy stays in place and you just connect the new filter box using a jubilee clip to the existing hose. Voila.
