v8 rangerover p38
Ive had my 1997 4.0 v8 rangerover in for lpg fitting it has a manual gearbox.
When i picked up the car after lpg fitment the car once i hit 35mph came up with an eas fault (air suspension) . I got it home and put it on the computer and the fault say vehicle speed sensor.
My question is could this be caused by wiring in lpg or could this just be a coincidence? The chap who fitted it says he only tapped into the wiring of the injection system.
Any help much appreciated.

Re: v8 rangerover p38
Doubtfull that it is connected unless he connected to a wrong wire by mistake but that is highly unlikely as the EAS ECU is under the passenger seat and the engine ECU is behind the battery under the bonnet. Probably just the periodic P38 random fault message that come up every so often to remind you of the variety of error messages it is capable of displaying. Did it just give the warning or did it drop to it's knees? Have a look here http://rangerovers.net/newrremedies.htm#suspension for description of virtually every little foible of the EAS system.

Re: v8 rangerover p38
I have a post on there already but they are saying its likely lpg related hence the reason i thought id try on here. The systems www.ac.com.pl/en/produkty/16/minikits stag 300-8. The eas was ok and never faulted before. Codes say vehicle speed sensor, i contacted the installer who fitted my lpg and he says he didnt tap into any wires but the injection system. Ive tried everything and im going nuts with the beeping and lights flashing on the dash because of this.
Re: v8 rangerover p38
If its a vehicle speed sensor fault[which one] and its a rear sensor its likely they have done something to the wiring when fitting the tank.
I have seen this before lots of times .

Re: v8 rangerover p38
The vehicle speed information comes from the ABS wheel sensors via the BeCM. As well as the EAS and ABS, this also feeds the speedo and various other bits of the car that need to know if it is moving or not. I've had a couple of random faults on my P38 due to bad connections in the plugs going into the BeCM. As this lives under the drivers seat, I wouldn't have expected the LPG installer to have gone anywhere near that either. Is it only the EAS that is giving faults or do you have any other faults like ABS warning lamps or the like?

Re: v8 rangerover p38
Hi thanks for the replys, when on the computer it just says vehicle speed sensor fault. Has no abs warning lamps and only goes into eas fault once travelling not while stationary. Its driving me nuts ive spent all weekend checking things in the freezing temperatures and snow we are having at the moment but no luck.
At the fuse box under the seat i see 2 wires where they have been chopped and joined in other places, im sure it was like this when i bought the car but had no faults then so not convinced this is the problem. I took the fuse out for the lpg but the problem still occured.

Re: v8 rangerover p38
Could i also add it isnt just a random fault it does this everytime i get in the car and do over 35mph. when connected to the computer it just says vehicle spped sensor fault. It doesnt say which sensor though and as they are quite expensive to replace all 4 would be expensive. Ive tried the plugs to the becm but do luck, ive spent so many hours messing and got no where.
Re: v8 rangerover p38
I must admit, if it is one of the wheel sensors, I can't see how fitting the LPG system could have affected either of the fronts, so Woodys suggestion of damaged wiring to the rears would seem favourite. Why you have no ABS or other faults showing up though, I have no idea.
The speed information to the BeCM is on pin 11 (Yellow/Green wire) on connector C114 which is a green 20 way connector on the front of the BeCM. Might be worth checking that although why fitting the gas system would affect it is still a mystery.

Re: v8 rangerover p38
Thanks for the diagram for the wiring to becm ive spent hours trying to get my rave working but adobe is playing games with me.
Should there be a voltage at the yellow/green wire and where does this wire go once its left the becm.
Ive checked wiring to wheel sensors and cleaned them. I got another fault when i read the faults on the computer today too
0. FL signal incorrect
1. vehicle speed fault

Re: v8 rangerover p38
The speed signal to the BeCM comes from Pin 28 of C115L which is the big connector that goes to the ABS ECU under the passeger side facia. Thinking about this logically, if you have no ABS warnings then the signals from the wheel sensors must be OK but it seems that the information is not being passed from the ABS ECU to the BeCM. Whether it is a voltage, a pulse (which I suspect it is) or a data line though isn't clear. However, you now have a fault showing with the Front Left speed sensor which could be the problem all along.....
I've had a couple of problems with the smaller connectors. The socket parts get worn or tired so that although the plug is fully inserted and looks fine there is no connection. A tweak with a jewellers screwdriver to close them up a bit sorted the problem. On mine it was the connector on the pressure sensor on the A/C system that wasn't making so it didn't realise it had pressure in it so wouldn't allow the compressor to kick in and a connector at the rear of the BeCM that fed ignition switched power to the brake light switch, HEVAC and EAS display.

Sounds complicated and looks like the multimeter is going to have to come out. Thanks for all the help and info you have supplied without forums like this id be skint.

Re: v8 rangerover p38
Just an idea as we encountered a simler issue a few months back..
Check that no self tappers have been used to secure the pipework under either the rear or front passenger compartments as the wiring from the rear sits very close to the floor...
Good Luck..

Re: v8 rangerover p38
it might be time to crawl under the motor and check the pipe run , another common cock up is using the tech screws which are to long and piercing the wiring harness causing a short .
keep looking it will show up eventually.

Re: v8 rangerover p38
I second that. Seen it on P38 before, door locks and windows were going crazy because a screw had caught the wiring near drivers seat.woody wrote:it might be time to crawl under the motor and check the pipe run , another common cock up is using the tech screws which are to long and piercing the wiring harness causing a short .

Re: v8 rangerover p38
Oh dear im not too happy, ive had a look under the car and the install isnt up to my expectations. The holes they cut look like they have been cut with a butter knife with no grommits or rust prevention just bare metal.
The bolts they have used to secure are loose and in my eyes a potential death trap.
Is £1300 a reasonable price for this shoddy work? I was so upset about the work i didnt even check the eas.
Im now wondering if i should have a 3rd party inspect the vehicle with the relevant experience to tell me their views. To be honest i want it right and safe as i have kids carried in the car on occasions.
Which side of the car does the wiring run down and do the seats and carpets have to come out, just want to be able to have an idea before i crack on with checking it as the weathers so cold and im ill.

Re: v8 rangerover p38
Thanks for the reply i see tech screws screwed in along the passenger side so will have a look over the weekend and let everyone know the outcome.
It has to go back in after 600miles for a check over, must admit the actual lpg system runs well although extremely slow to fill up. I just think the holes drilled should have been treated not left with sharp edges.

Re: v8 rangerover p38
£1300 is about half-price against a P38 conversion with quality kit.
Loose bolts though?

Re: v8 rangerover p38
hmmm it cant be the fitment of the lpg as on the way to work the other day i drove all the way to work without the fault.
Shame the works not up to the standards id have expected, im a mechanic by trade and rather than ask the fitter to rectify the work im going to do it myself.
Im thinking the eas faults a wheel sensor but the computers not giving fault codes for this.
