until when are we supposed to have lower tax/duty on lpg?

A letter I received from Countrywide told me that HMR&C had confirmed that it had been extended by 2 years so we have another 5 years grace.

Newbie question, Were I to produce my own methane would I be taxed on it ...for road use that is!

Yes.
All road fuels attract duty.
Methane would fall into the same "gaseous fuel" bracket as ordinary natural gas:

P.S. Biodiesel "small producers" (i.e. homebrewers) get an exemption for the first X thousand litres. Possibly something similar applies to biogas.

I don't see how the tax could be increased without killing off the LPG industry. Since I've been using LPG over 10 years ago, I've seen the industry contract just out of speculation of an increase. The cost of installation is already considered by most people, too much for the long term rewards.

As long as the tax increase is on a par with the duty on petrol, there will always be a differential so it will always be cheaper to run on LPG. With the perceived green advantages too (confirmed by the reductions in road tax and exemptions from congestion charging) it is unlikely that the tax would be increased by more than that on petrol either.

Good point. There is a reduced road tax for LPG? I guess I'm not entitled because I'm running a 1999 car.

No, it only applies to cars registered after 1st March 2001 that use the sliding scale depending on emission levels, so those of us with pre-2001 cars just pay the same rate no matter what fuel we use.

so my discovery which was imported in 2003 can have lower road tax ?

That would depend on how it was registered in the UK. Are you currently paying road tax based on CO2 emissions bands, which would qualify for a small reduction? More likely it is registered as a pre-2001 built vehicle, and not eligible.

So am I reading it right? LPG is to go up in jan by 5.74p per kg, there are 2l per kg? If so that's 2.84p

That's about right. Petrol and diesel duty will go up by 3.02p
