I recently bought an interface cable on eBay which has a serial connector (9 pin D-type). Unfortunately (due to stupidity on my part) this can't connect to my laptop because it doesn't have an RS232 connection - d'oh!

I was going to buy a serial-to-USB converter but the guy that sold me the interface says the AEB Leo software won't work like that. Tinsley Tech sell a converter cable, which suggests the LEO will work via the USB.

It's too late today to ring them so does anyone here know if I can use the Leo software via the USB port with a converter? If so, I can buy a converter from my local Maplins in the morning

If you are lucky maybe. Automotive programmes don't like some modern laptops. I had to buy an old banger to work with Aeb kit as it did not like Dell/Vista. The old banger worked perfectly well with windows 2000 2009 and the aeb programme with serial connector.

Hi Billy,

My laptop isn't particularly new or high tech and is running Windoze XP Home. The problem is the lack of traditional serial port

YES - well on my IBM Thinkpad it does anyway

All I have to do now is learn how to use the software to improve the fuel consumption

If everything is working as it should, you can't. The Leo sets the amount of gas according to the output from the lambda sensor so if that is working as it should then there's nothing you can change. I suppose that if the minimum openings allowed for the actuator were higher than needed under certain situations, that could affect things. The only thing that can have an appreciable effect on consumption is setting the over run cut off.

That's the thing isn't it? Without the diagnostic software I'm not sure everything is working properly.

Fuel consumption on LPG is significantly higher than on petrol which is not what I am used to from my previous 3.9 Discovery where consumption was 16-17 mpg on either fuel.

I keep very detailed records of fuel consumption for tax purposes. On petrol I get a consistent 17mpg but on lpg it has varied from 9.1 to 14.6 with the overall average being 11.4. Okay, the 9.1 is a bit of an odd-ball because I gave the motor a pretty hefty caning that day - I was in a hurry - but the next lowest is 9.7 and that was driving "normally".

I expect/hope to find something wrong

Here's an answer for you. Yes. I bought a usb to serial port adaptor from usbnow.co.uk for £13 htmi chipset or whatever. using a newish laptop with xp.

Cheers for the response. I bought an adapter from Maplin for £9.95

I just need some time now to actually get to grips with it
