Range Rover 1996 HSE 4.6 on LPG tank in spare well MPG issue

Just joined. Trying to understand this MPG expectancy on LPG. The tank is a 60 litre tank in the spare wheel well.

I filled the tank until it could take no more. LPG, spent, 42.27 litres at 49.9p, cost £21.09.

Reset the counter, got only 100 miles from this tank, then the four leds ran down to the red led lit. I have just refilled now, putting in 44.12 litres.

I am putting the fuel in when the red light appears, but it seems I am about 20 litres premature!! as everytime the light is red I only refill with the capacity of 40 to 45 litres till full again. The OBD is showing average mpg 20 mpg.

A test on an online caluculator site shows that I should do,100 miles, 49p per litre, 20mpg, costing £11.12 cost for 100 miles. 40 litres refill is costing me £21 after 100 miles driven?!?!

From my figures, is this correct, as I only fill up with 40 litres when the red light is on.

The seller stated there may be an issue with one of the lambda sensors?

I think 100 miles in my conversion should cost me £11 odd, but it is costing me £21 odd. 40 litres replaced.

Correct? Or is there an issue there? My figures are confusing me.

There's the problem. 20mpg in a 4.6 HSE, and one 11 yrs old with a suspect part or ten?

Hmmmm!

Work on 12mpg overall and you'll be closer to the truth.

Best I've ever done in a 4.2 LSE is 17mpg on the motorway driving like our Vicar (more Tea?) and 10mpg when doing short runs and around the lanes.

Yeah, suppose you are right.

I was expecting to average 12-15 mpg when I bought it TBH.

This was all motorway at 60/70 mph though on the first tank.

Is that correct?

Engine was rebuilt at 150000, it is now on 166000.

It has just been serviced at Steve Hill independant Land Rover specialist in Bristol 3k miles ago. All service parts as expected and extras including gear oils etc. A new valley gasket, head gasket, oil pan.

He also changed one of the two lambdas that was believed suspect... He still is concerned on handover that the wrong lambda may have been changed...

THIS MAY BE IT...

I have it booked into Kings langley land rover indie beginning of Dec. They will have a look at all stuff concerned and check the lambdas effectivness

Not to worry too much Col, the Lambda thing is worth following up for sure and here's a little comfort - Daimler 6.0L V12 in sport mode, boot to floor and fuel computer reads ......1 mpg .......On petrol!

Consolation is found in getting it up to 80mph and then foot off - 99mpg!
The older 5.3L model goes right up to 255mpg in the same conditions.
Life is sweet when going downhill, whatever they tell you.

I'm driving a '98 RR 4.6 with a 95 lit tank and have done 46k (148K on the clock).

Consistant at 12mpg on gas and indicating 14mpg on the dash, getting 200 miles roughly per fill. Speaking to others, that seems typical.

Whether motorway or town driving, it varies little.

Don't expect too much MPG on gas. Although my previous vehicle - a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 5.2 litre - equalled its performance and mileage compared to petrol, my current ride (1976 Silver Shadow) will do just over 200 miles on 74 litres of LPG.
To put it in context; it's 210 miles from my home (cold start) to Hull, then from Zeebrugge (another cold start) to the French border and back to Brugge, then Brugge (yep, another cold start) to Zeebrugge and, finally, Hull (last cold start) back home. Excluding short legs on petrol (usually I can switch over in under a mile depending on traffic) that's still comfortably in excess of 200 miles - 11mpg

My 4.6 HSE is around 12 to 14 mpg.

I have 2 tanks in tyre well giving me about 97 to 98 ltrs.


I would say 220 miles per fill is normal, best I ever got was about 260 but that was French Gas. Worst was 180 also on French gas but towing a loaded caravan.

Ignore the tank level lights they are generally a poor guide

once mine goes red i get another 50 miles or so!

they are inherantly inacurate, i run mine till it stutters or dont want to accelerate any more, dont like to run it dry so never go completely empty!

60 litres LPG or 60 litres water capacity?

a 60 litre water capacity tank holds about 48 litres of LPG (80%).

Your system could also be changing back to petrol due to low supply pressure from the tank when it gets low.

Consumption-wise, I get between 17 litres/100km hwy and 22 litres/100km town driving from my 1995 GEMS 4.6 Rangie (auto)
