Hi, i've bought a '96 range rover from japan thats done 47k. Just a few quick questions, cheers for any help 1)Are LPG prices going to keep rising as they have been recently? 2)Will LPG make the engine run hotter? 3)Anyone heard of Herts autogas, good/bad? I dont cover huge mileages but i plan on keeping it for a very long time cheers again, grant

Hopefully they will stabilize now at aboutm half the price of petrol. Remember, you're actually saving more now than before the recent petrol/LPG rises. Personally, LPG, where I live, is cheaper than it has ever been in the four and a half years since I converted, since another supplier has opened for business. LPG won't make your car run hotter, but it may double the life of your engine.

Grant, who can say what prices will be in the future, but one thing for sure don't think they will come down, I'd say LPG will always be cheaper to run than petrol so at least your saving now with your current vehicle, yes your engine will run a bit hotter ON LPG, as the Octane rating is higher than Petrol, make sure that your cooling system is in good nick as well,if your on duel fuel,check your timing,and make sure your plugs are the right type for LPG,

Cheers for the replies. I suppose the question is whether the price difference will remain, both will keep rising. Upgrading the rad, changing the thermo etc might be an idea if i go for it then

By the way, i've had a quote for £1950+ VAT for a Prins VSI sequential, 95 litre spare wheel. LPGA fitted. Does this sound any good? thanks

How can an engine run hotter on LPG when it is widely known/accepted/established that LPG has only 85% (or thereabouts) of the calorific value of petrol? The answer is plain - It cannot. Another cartload of what we can politely call 'pub talk' which does not stand up to reason of any kind. For clarity - Any petrol engine converted to run on LPG will not run hotter, and after 1100 conversions (to date) I'd claim proof of that statement by experience. I'VE HEARD That petrol has a wetting/cooling effect on the valves .were-as lpg does not ..........think that's what they are on about. all the best..mark

As regards the price difference betwixt lpg and petrol remaining, I think we can only expect this to last for a few more years. Sooner or later the government of the day will decide to re-instate the full level of duty on LPG and the price will rise, overnight, to be more or less in parallel with petrol. Cheers Gary

Mark - The question posed was 'Will LPG make the engine run hotter?' This has to be a general 'hotter' and not focussing on localised temperatures, e.g. valves etc. The answer is still no. You point is a good one, however - Any loss of petrol wetting/cooling effect that has been lost when running on LPG is far outwieghed by the vaporiser removing (on average) around 5Kw of heat from the coolant system. End result = The engine (in general terms, not localised) actually runs siightly cooler if there is any difference at all. This is why the heater seems to take so much longer to work its magic in these cold months....It seems to because it does! Thanks for all the replies. After todays budget lpg increases i've decided not to go for an lpg conversion. Its pretty obvious todays increases are the start of many. Im going to consider buying diesel discovery and filling up with veggie oil instead, only way i can see of beating him. Thanks again.

Regards Steve yup agreed. may I also add Because lpg causes less build up of carbon in your engine ...particalary the combustion chamber......carbon has an insulating effect. so with lpg there will be more heat transfer to the water because there is less carbon ,,,, also points to remember ../ Oil in an lpg engine does not turn black with carbon from unburnt fuel. therefor your motor oil stays clean and less wear takes place in general. There is no wash down the bores like there is on petrol on a cold morning .... This wash down causes a lot of wear in a petrol engine. You don't have to worry about wearing your engine out with short journeys ........this is minimal with lpg....so jump in and go down the road to the shops and back with no worries. all the best...mark
