Romano Vapouriser in Rolls Royce

I have a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow fitted with a Romano Vaporiser and single mixer. My problem is that it appears that the mixture is too lean on idle on LPG. Could anyone direct me to a site or listing that would show me how to set up the vaporiser. Also I have heard of some of these 6.7 ltr V8's being set up with two pipes into the intake horns instead of a mixer. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Thanks for that Steve. The car was converted about 18 months ago by Autogas worldwide in Newport and has run fine until now. The reason I have a problem is that the car has been idle for around 4 months and wouldn't start on petrol because the petrol pump had stuck ( a common fault with electric pumps) I started it on gas and then tapped the fuel pump which then burst into life overfueling the engine causing a massive backfire which has split the intake hose. I need to move the car to my workshop to make the repairs but it will not run properly because I think it is now too lean.Don't want to do anything with the petrol system if I can avoid it. By the way I am a qualified engineer but new to LPG. I just want to enrich the gas mixture temporarily to get the car away and repaired then it will be tuned back to original. I do not want to waste too much time with trial and error adjustments.

bob , seen this done lots of times in mexico with american v8's ; not convinced it is the most efficent method , but as you demonstrate , it works! david , the normal method of actuating the petrol pump when you start is through the starter motor ; so if this happens again , leave it switched to petrol , and get someone to actuate the starter while you give the pump a tap ; hopefully , no more big bangs

If the car did work fine and is now not surely you dont need to change the components a big backfire could have damaged the vapouriser diaphram. If I was you I would contact Autogas worldwide talk to colin I have found him helpful and knowlegeable in the past.

After reading your latest post, including a more full description of the problem, I have to say I agree fully with Gasspark. It is most likely that the backfire has damaged the vaporiser, more than likely the diaphragm inside it. If the intake hose is split that will lean the mixture off. Tape it up and see if that impoves things. A backfire should not spilt the diaphram. Mike

Thanks for that advice Mike. I have now obtained a replacement for the split hose and will try the system again after fitting. How would I know if the vaporiser diaphragm is split? Are there any pressure measurements I can take? I guess I will have to get some training in order to fully understand the setting up of these systems.

If it has split the engine will not rev properly as it will not get the fuel it needs. Mike

The Diaphragm does not have to be split. Note that I wrote 'It is most likely that the backfire has damaged the vaporiser, more than likely the diaphragm inside it.' 'Damaged' does not automatically mean split. It could mean localised or widespread stretching of the diaphragm, effectively putting the unit out of tune after only one backfiring occurence. Hi Guys have now managed to get the intake system reassembled correctly and guess what the thing runs perfectly again. It starts on gas without too much problem as it is garaged but can anyone advise me whether it is better to switch from petrol to gas while running under power or idling to avoid the possibility of backfire as I was told to start on petrol when the system was originally fitted?
