Has anyone converted a Celica?

I'm just about to have mine done & wondered if anyone has already converted one?

I believe the Hondas are a problem, because of little space to work with under the hood. But don't know about Toys.

I think there's enough space as its not the GT4 model which has the turbo bits added in - they have had a look. I've replaced the air filter with a cone so there should be more than enough. I just wondered if the 3S GE engine had been done before to give them any further help. Booked for 9th Jan in Bath.

If it's an internal combustion engine that runs on gasoline, there's no special consideration other than whether it's pre-'99 or not. A while back I saw a lawn mower that'd been converted to LPG! If you don't know, lawn mowers can put out more pollution than an average car. Pre-'99 cars can only get a venturi system, and '99+later can get either venturi or multiport. My opinion is that multiport is more efficient and responsive, although it is more expensive.

Erm, as a general rule, I hear that you want to avoid kit brands that start with 'B'. That's the word on the street, and I think the installers here would agree, although I'm just a Yank who's a fan. Good brands are Romano, OMVL, IMPCO, Prins, and Tartarini. I have the Prins multiport VSI system. In 1999 the OBD2 system was introduced. It's the real-time on-board diagnostic computer system that controls all engine functions. An advanced system like multiport injection depends on the conclusions of the car's factory OBD2 computer, and since earlier cars do not have one... So, you'll have a venturi system. They've been in use since 1913, and are pretty good as long as they run in closed-loop mode. Closed-loop means the exhaust oxygen is constantly measured, giving an indication of how complete combustion has been, so the computer knows whether to set current fuel mixture more rich or more lean. IOW the closed loop is, it's measuring what goes out to decide what goes in. An open-loop system can only ever guess as to what the fuel mixture should be, and so is less efficient and more polluting.

Bill - according to <a href="http://www.obdii.com/" target=_top>http://www.obdii.com/</a> OBD2 was introduced to all cars sold in the USA on 01 Jan 1996 and late 1995 vehicles were equipped. As a rule of thumb, GM cars and light trucks use SAE J1850 VPW (Variable Pulse Width Modulation). Chrysler products and all European and most Asian imports use ISO 9141 circuitry. Fords use SAE J1850 PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) communication patterns. Katy, your celica is OBD2 compliant - as it's construction was completed in the united states after late 1995 before shipping to the UK. I cant think of a single reason why the 3rd rev 3sge will not be a good engine for LPG - from what you've described your kit is a very modern principal and is the latest technology. Karl

I'm very impressed with it. Absolutley no problems with it running, even at 15psi and on Wide Open Throttle... go figure?! This ket was installed by the infamous Mike @ Chiltern Cars, so maybe it's down to the fine workmanship.. Rich

I didn't change my mind - I said I'm just about to have mine done..... they have had a look...booked for 9th Jan in Bath.....they are planning to use BRC components...... I wanted to check if anyone had done a Celica so I could pick up tips (if any) & pass them on.

Well its been done for ten months now & its been great <img src="http://www.my90.co.uk/lpgforum/clipart/proud.gif" border=0> - I've done over 9000 miles & only a few teething problems which were quickly sorted by Greenfuel. The only issue i have is that the local garage charges 48p/l, whereas countrywide charge 43p.... I'm saving about £60 per month on fuel costs, doing just under 1000 miles per month. Payback will take 27 months at that rate.
