Welding a wheel arch

Hello all,

I need to do a small amount of welding on the outer wheel arch of a vehicle. It’s about 18” from the lpg tank and the filler. Am I ok to go ahead without removing anything? I’m thinking of putting something non flammable between the tank and where I’m welding. Thank you

We can't picture the exact positions of the pipe, filler, tank and where you're welding but it seems like you've got the right idea about sensible precautions and you'll know better than us whether or not it's likely sparks etc could hit gas components.

Don't need to teach you to suck eggs but obviously make sure there are no leaks and the tank isn't going to heat up and start venting.

Some fill pipes are copper, some are rubber hose. Molten steel could go through either. Sparks and splatter aren't really going to hurt the tank unless it's severely rusted etc.

Depending on positon of the fill pipe you mentioned I might think about disconnecting the fill pipe at one end before welding, the pipe would then be empty, then if you accidentally holed it without realising you'd know if it leaked when you went to fill up... not much of a problem because you'd just disconnect from the pump then come back to change the pipe, versus the obvious potential consquence of going through a pipe full of liquid gas in the presence of sparks.
