Converting Renault Megane 2.0 Cabriolet - any thoughts?

Hi All,

Im thinking of having my wifes Renault Megane Coupe Cabriolet 2.0 (2005 model - the one with the folding hardtop) converted. Its a very thirsty 2.0 auto model doing 25 mpg around town

Is it possible? There is room for a torodial tank in the boot (theres a spare wheel well for a full size wheel under the boot carpet so no loss of the already small boot space - although it doesnt come with a spare wheel - just tyreweld).

My main concern is the spare wheel well is plastic - obviously it must be strong enough to hold a spare wheel and I have seen it done on -

which appears to have 2 metal supporting brackets running across the top.

Is this ok to do in the UK (it think the car on youtube is in the Netherlands so I guessing regulations maybe different), will my insurer have a problem with it?

Yes that's kind of the way you have to do it with plastic spare wheel well's. Or variations on that kind of theme anyway. I did however notice on the video that the steering wheel and pedals seem to be on the wrong side of the car, i hope yours is the correct way round. I remember doing a LWB shogun many moons ago that was a left hooker. The ammount of time i spent getting into the passenger seat was unreal !

At least they're both on the same side - would be a nightmare if the steering wheel was on one side and the pedals the other

I remember a magazine doing a car like that for a laugh, to use on track days...

No its a normal right hand drive with the pedals AND the steering wheel on the same side!!!

Some of the Renaults have a slightly peculiar fuelling methodology that can see the engine stall on return to fuelling after a period of over-run unless the mixture on LPG is richened (above what the normal map would dictate) immediately following a period of over-run. Not a big deal to work around but it helps to fit suitable components with short pipe lengths and use an ECU that can be set to give the slightly richer mixture following over-run.

Many many thanks for a reply. well being as the car is only a 2007 model I can only presume this is very basic? Can you at least help with this? Also I noted the YouTube link didn't work. My main worry is the tank will interfere with the roof going in the boot!

My missus has a Merc SLK with a similar hard folding roof and a friend of hers has a 2008 Megane convertible that I get roped in to mending when it needs it. In both cases, they have a spare wheel well so a tank can go in there as long as it doesn't encroach into the boot area too much. You might have a problem if you want to carry the spare around in the boot but the Megane has a much bigger boot than the overgrown glovebox pretending to be a boot on the SLK.

If you're asking if I convert it, definitely yes lol. I don't remember off the cuff if the 2007 Renault 2L engine is among those that benefits from the 'special' measures but I would have them in mind during the install and calibration anyway so it wouldn't be an issue if I converted it.
