I had to visit Bristol today. In order to avoid paying a £9 charge to drive my dirty lpg fueled car into the city, I made use of the Park and Ride system. I sat on a diesel engined double decker bus with just 4 other people on board, feeling very smug about my environmental credentials. WTF is going on in this country??

Many non complying vehicles were (until recently) showing as exempt. It does seem unlikely that it has too much to do with clean air - given that Bristol had been ignoring (the old) EU laws long before we left.
Bristol Council have capped bus fares temporarily and have been subsidising private bus companies (more than usual) since covid.
Charging non euro 4/6 cars away seems likely to be a carrot/stick approach to enable the Council to be (seen to be) actively responding to the threat of damaged health claims. Virtue signalling at best.
Once the bus subs are cancelled, Bristol is likely to really struggle. Even with the subsidies, the bus companies have cancelled the less profitable routes, concentrating on the easy cash cows. Of course, this is due to a driver shortage and nothing to do with greedy companies screwing the government and passengers for every penny.
Bristols largest hospital is no longer reachable by bus* from large outlying towns.
* by taking multiple busses (90 minutes) and waiting on the side of a dual carriage way to swap busses, it is still possible. But not suitable for most appointment times and definitely not suitable for older patients/hospital visitors.
But most of the busses are now CNG.
Time for my left wing rant: the council must run public transport and take blame for cost/performance/coverage. Yes, I am old enough to remember nationalised public transport performance

Yea, what a farce. you have that Scaffolder in London successfully challenging his ULEZ fine in court.
Also I don't think the checkers on the UFL or gov.uk sites take into account the older petrol cars that in many cases do hit the Euro 4 standards.
In the VW camp cars from about midway through 1999, seem to be euro4 compliant but t's a pain in the arse to get a certificate of conformity.
