LPG installer for P38 4.6 V8

#1 Post by v8vroom »

Hi all,

I’m trying to find the going rate for LPG fitters across the UK.
Does anyone have a competitively priced fitter? I’m willing to travel. I’m Midlands based.

So not given up totally then (I'm Richard_G on rangerovers.net and Gilbertd everywhere else)?

You just need to keep looking, the right car is out there somewhere.

You sent me down another rabbit hole once you sent the eBay links. 😅

I’m looking at all options. Quotes in the Midlands start from £1300 so I’m wondering if it’s any cheaper elsewhere.

Seeing as LPGC is a common recommendation on here and also starts from £1300, I think finding a P38 that is already converted is the best bet.

I'd love to try but it seems like an absolute headache to do. I wouldn't know where to start.

LPGC (Simon) does do DIY kits with support if needed.

Biggest part of the expense by itself is the tank.

Also depends which P38 V8 your dealing with - I think its a GEMS from what was said before, which would work on a single point kit which is somewhat cheaper as well as a bit simpler to install.

Having LPG doesn't generally add much if anything to the value so if you can find one you like, that may work out cheaper and easier even if you have to fix the install currently on it.

v8vroom did txt message me, I think he's on the lookout to buy one that's already been converted.

Been a while since I sold any DIY kits, so busy converting vehicles myself that I wouldn't have time to do the tech support for DIYers.

I wonder what fraction of all petrol P38's in the UK have already been converted to LPG? Seems more than half to me... but then again every P38 that visits me is either already LPG converted or is about to be LPG converted lol.

Looking at cars for sale on eBay, most haven't been converted but I suspect they are being sold because of the running costs while those that have aren't being offered for sale. He's been posting amongst the Americans on rangerovers.net and is looking for one in Black, ideally already converted but the only one he found was a Thor with an Impco singlepoint on it and a seller that didn't seem to understand the concept of maintenance (low on oil, low on coolant, etc) so he wisely walked away. I advised him I wouldn't be happy with a singlepoint on a Thor but the Impco is a bit of an unknown quantity (I've never even seen one in the flesh). The only others on the market at the moment haven't been converted.

Still single point like a mixer system but I'd term an Impco system a gas carb system rather than a mixer system. On an Impco system gas is under a bit of pressure from the reducer to the 'mixer' where airflow deflects a metering vane / diaphragm which controls how much gas gets into airflow.

They can work really well on a suited engine and it'd be easy to make the case that they're superior to mixer systems but (like a petrol carb) they don't lend themselves as easily to closed loop operation as a conventional mixer system and on an unsuited engine they can still cause backfiring just the same as a mixer system (although less likely to backfire in certain conditions such as quickly opening the throttle such as when a powerboat sets off quickly to pull a skier out of the water).
