will it run on an orange bottle ?

#1 Post by robertXX »

Quick question chaps ,

in an emergency situation .....if i connect a normal 18kg bottle with a hose to my filler ,and carry the bottle in the boot, ,so it may be supplying liquid or gas , depending on corners etc , will the engine run , if using a venturi and omvl r90 mixer ?

regards
robert

It will if you stand the bottle upside down so it'll be drawing liquid (or use a forklift bottle with a tube inside so it draws from one side, hence the this way up arrow on them).

Not sure you'd get much luck with connecting it to the filler, think the normal way to do that is to connect the bottle to the outlet from the normal tank and turn it upside down. Depends if you can get enough pressure out of the bottle to override the one-way valve in the filler and on the tank really. You could use a pump to transfer between the two though if you can find one.

Ah yes, missed the filler bit. As Bri says, there probably wouldn't be enough pressure differential to open the non-return valves. However, if you were to put a Tee in the line between tank and vaporiser to connect your bottle to, then the non-return valves would present a problem. Thinking it through, if you put your Tee in with a valve to open when you need to run from the bottle and another valve to isolate the tank so you weren't trying to put the contents of the bottle into the tank (or arrange for the tank solenoid to shut off when you want to run from a bottle).....

The one way valve at the tank can easily be disabled with some makes of multivalve (leaving only the one way valve in the filler itself) but there wouldn't be an easy way of getting around the one way valve in the filler.

Neither the filler or the tank has a strong closing spring in it's one way valve, it doesn't take a lot of pressure to open the valve, at high enough temperatures if main tank pressure falls because it's empty and because gas is still being drawn off it some liquid gas might flow from the portable tank even with one way valves in place but I wouldn't expect consistent results with that kind of plumbing. Better to plumb the outlet of the portable tank to the feed to the engine directly and in practice it would be just as simple to plumb it that way as to make a pipe to attach the portable tank to the vehicle filler. If you used a forklift bottle the forklift connector has a one-way valve built into it anyway, so if you didn't connect a forklift bottle no gas would leak when using the main tank (this is something I have done). If you use a fitting to connect to a camping gas style bottle you could make the whole extension pipe disconnectable by using hanson fittings (no leaks when disconnected) or by using a gate valve, I've done both of those too and will soon be setting up a customer vehicle with removable interior tank.

If you want to fill a forklift bottle you need to remember the forklift connectors have built in one-way valves but there are ways to get around that.

blimey , what a great response thank you amigos :)

i was wondering if , if the main tank is empty ,and the car has stopped running due to this , if its on a mixer ring , then the tank would be emptier then if it was on injection ?
if that is true , would the tank be so empty ,since the mixer would use up all vapour as well , that the orange tank pressure would push through a little bit , then pressure would equalise ,then car would go a few miles till tank empty again then orange tank would squeak a bit more in ? and so on ...

There would still be some pressure in the tank, trouble is as soon as the pressure equalises in both you'd stop transferring as you say. The problem is that pressure is still there regardless of liquid or vapour being the contents. You might get away with it, but results very likely to be unpredictable. You've also got to somehow get from a pol fitting to whatever filler type you've got fitted somehow.

I probably shouldn't say this... If you plan on using a bottle to fill the main tank via the usual vehicle filler rather than plumbing from the bottle to the front/rear pipe that connects to the reducer, heating the bottle would allow you to shift more gas from the bottle into the main tank. Various ways of heating the bottle including wrapping it with an aftermarket tie-on and plug into a fag lighter socket heated seat cover or just sticking it on a portable gas stove lol.

I have an emergency pump in the boot just in case it consists of a high pressure inline fuelpump from Amazon 35 quid an lpg vapour filter 5 quid and some hose and the nessasary fittings for the gas bottle and car inlet it connects to bottle and car and open the valve then connect to car battery (it has a long wire) not the fastest but will fill my tank in about 10 mins

I will say use at your own risk I have used and it's fine but common sense is needed and the pump is not rated for lpg only petrol and diesel I will post a pic later
