Only 99p per litre!

My local Shell decommissioned their lpg last year. Yesterday, I popped in to my nearest alternative which is a small tinpot part time filling station about 12 miles away. Only after filling did I realise it was costing me 99 pence per litre. I was told that Calor had recently increased their prices. I have a feeling they are not gonna sell much at that price...

Not unless petrol is far more expensive round that way. Given its 112.7 at the local Asda for petrol I can't imagine theres much if any saving to be had on that.

The pricing locally to me is a bit odd - the local BP is currently 69.9 but the motorway services (Also BP) is 63.9. All the other local alternatives look to be disappearing as the two remaining Shell stations round here have notices on the tanks saying do not fill awaiting decomissioning.

Unfortunately I don't have a choice locally any more so running both my vehicles on petrol again, which is annoying. I suppose I could try filling from bottles, which may still work out cheaper than petrol, but I haven't been able to find a pump that will perform this task at a reasonable price.

When I looked at it, unless you can get the bottles cheaply, it isn't cheaper. Its possible to get bottles cheaply in some places, but I doubt your in the right area to do so. From what you've said before (and I'd guess from the price) that your using Opie oils and the only other option is Crane garage?

I think it's about time we all started clubbing together and buying up some of the pensioned off filling stations rather than let them be used for car washes. Install a credit card operated pump like they have in numerous places in Eastern Europe and you don't even need any staff.

One of my local filing stations is Shell branded but owned and operated by Euro Garages (EG Group), the same two brothers that have recently bought Asda. I wonder if talking to them would get us anywhere?

A skid unit can be had ready to go for around 6 grand, but you'd need some way to add the credit card payment side to that. EG seem more interested in the shop side of the business than the filling station for fuel - using the fuel to get people there in the first place, but making their profits from the shop sales moreso than the fuel sales.

Maybe, but I might try writing to them and suggesting opening low emission filling stations doing LPG and a few electric charging points. Could even win them some brownie points from HMG, especially if it could be powered by solar panels......

There's nothing to stop pentioned off forecourts that have turned into hand car washes fitting LPG refuelling facilities anyway... I have thought about obtaining such premises and fitting LPG refuelling facilities, might even run a car wash from the place Nothing against fitting EV recharging facilities on the same site either (well not if HMG is happy to chip in anyway). From an infrastructure angle it would be far easier/cheaper to set up an LPG filling station than an EV charging centre but if HMG chips in with the EV bit then why not have the EV bit? Winner winner from all points of view including HMG.

It may be cheaper than 99p a litre Yes, Crane garage is an option but it's not a filling station, it's a small garage where they do lpg conversions, not sure how many these days, but last time I visited I couldn't even get to the filling tank as it was surrounded by parked cars, I don't think it gets used often. Plus, it's a long way from me in the 'wrong' direction. If I knew I could get hold of a workable electric transfer pump, then I could look at what price I can get bottles for...

Last time I looked Calor were selling refills for a 19kg bottle around £50 (19kg would be about 38 litres). Flogas were around £32 for the same. Birmingham Autogas I picked up 2 refills before Christmas at £18 each. I've not found anywhere cheaper or even close to their prices (we use their cylinders on the workshop space heater, not to fill a car from).

Flogas would work out slightly cheaper than your 99p a litre at that. 47kg bottles should be cheaper on a per litre/kg basis, but they could be a PITA to handle at the same time due to size and weight.

It might be worth asking if Opie can do a better price for you on an account or similar if your using enough to justify it. I'm down to 1 local working station here now, and the closest motorway services area that carries LPG is currently cheaper than they are. Previous experience says the local one is liable to be a few pence higher than most of the competition as well, though at least its 69.9 not 99p

Looks like the local BP has decided to take advantage of being the only station working here at the moment, and bumped their price up to 79.9 with a 10p increase.

You might find this station to be useful - seems to have appeared recently at 70p a litre on the usual station finders, think its only been open a month now. Cash only.
