Romano RIS software not connecting

#1 Post by jayc »

Hi Folks,

Not touched anything LPG for some time now but I was asked to have a look at a friends bongo with RIS system fitted. It runs on gas but frequently stalls. I've got a universal LPG interface (USB-serial). It's worked with most systems over the years and but I can't seem to connect to the Romano ecu.

I've tried the RISN software and this fails to connect. I can't find any options in the to specify the com port. Does it search all ports for a connection? I'm not entirely sure its a RISN system as I can't fully see the ECU due to placement. I've tried the RIS software but that shuts down as soon as I run it. There's an error in foreign but I forgot to note it down.

Has anyone got any ideas? I'll note the error at the weekend when I have a better look but I think the problem relates to com port selection.

Thanks.

Serial software often assumes COM1, or at least a low number, but USB to serial adapters often configure themselves as COM13 or something much higher. Assuming a Windoze computer, try going into Device Manager and manually setting the COM port to as low a number as it will let you.

I've already tried all the lower com ports. I thought it was strange the romano software didn't have an option to specify what port. Most software I've used previously had it.

The older RIS software may require a hardware key (dongle) Magic word in the complaint in Italian would be "chiave"
This stuff is old enough to likely never work with USB

Windows versions beyond xp can also cause older software to struggle as well, particually 64 bit versions. If you can find an xp machine it may be worth giving that a go with your lead.

Yeah defo remember seeing chiave in the error. The install isn't that old so feasible it's risn other than the older ris.

Laptop is running vista 32bit. Was no go on my 7-64 so I grabbed a vista 32 from work. I had considered xp. To be fair all my previous diagnostics have been done on xp machines. Reloading with xp it is then.

Thanks. I'll report back results after the weekend.

I think Mint used to let people, installers anyway, have a partially cracked version of the old RIS software, which won't let you change settings but will at least allow you to view all the figures etc.

As advised by others above, if this is the Romano N system you should have no bother connecting or changing settings with easily available software provided you're using a compatible OS.

I do have a working Romano RIS ECU - If yours is RIS and is broken, though, you'd be better off fitting something more modern.

If it's any help i have version 6 of the RISN software I can send you. It works happily on my Windows 7 x64 laptop with a USB-Serial connector.
