VALVE SAVER LUBE?

#1 Post by NigelD »

does anyone know what are the ingredients?

are the different manufacturers using the same recipe?

I read on an Australian forum sometime or other that you can just use diesel and slow down the drip rate and have the same protection?

has anyone came up with a recipe they'd be happy to use as an alternative to the stuff thats on the market?

If you google the care of substance and handling for flashlube etc it gives a indication of its contents, I have looked into this myself. I seem to remember kerosine and white spirit being mentioned within its contents. Overall I would have thought a small amount of diesel would be a advantage over using nothing but obviously my experience has no scientific backup just common sence approach. I would have thought a mix of synthetic two stroke oil, white spirit and diesel would be a good substitute.

Yes ! Flashlube !
It manages to coat the exhaust valves on the way out as well. Doubtful diesel, kero, 2 stroke and white spirit will do that tbh !

well - how would we know that without knowing the constituents of any of the valve saver products?

Kerosene and white spirit are the liquids that carry the ingredients that do the work, not the components that do it. You need to find out what the active ingredients are not what the bulking agents are.

I don’t have the slightest idea what should be used…..
99% sure that you really musn’t use synthetic 2 stroke in a CAT engine.

Surely if you are going to the trouble of making your own you could just use a cheap solvent as a carrier then good old fashioned Tetra Ethyl Lead as the valve saving agent? If you have a look up what is used in the valve saver products for running leaded engines on unleaded you'll get a pretty good idea of what you need to add. I can't see just oil synthetic 2 stroke or any other doing any good against VSR.

Just had a thought, is flash lube reasonably flammable on its own as you could probably use 100LL/ 110LL (LL = low lead but its not that low really) avgas with an oil mix.

On a old carb engine 2 stroke oil might do the job but on anything with a cat it will not take long for that to clog the cat up.

Have a google on lead replacement additives to what does the job

Fully synthetic low ash two stroke oil at the concentration suggested shouldn't harm anything. Modern two strokes even it be in a strimmer have a cat in the exhaust, this is why you don't use oldschool two stroke oil. Many diesel car owners add a bit of two stroke oil to their fuel, there are plenty that say it improves the smoothness but that's subject for another post.
are there any non scientific disadvantage to running with a diesel drip feed? Surely it should help cut down on vsr. Obviously were talking small amounts. The theory could be correct.

How? The temperature in the combustion chamber will be way higher than that at which diesel ignites so it will just burn with the fuel.

Hi Rob,

You could be confusing 'low ash' with fully synthetic.
Semi Synthetic or mineral 2 stroke will (mostly) burn, will raise the temperature of petrol engine and (providing there isn't too much) will pass through the engine without leaving a coating. Fully sythentic will not.

If you have a link to a industrial 2 stroke with a CAT (IE strimmer, generator), please post one as it would be intersting to read the makers suggestions on oils.

You could follow up on the adding 2t to a CI engine - there is lots written that explains the theory far better than I can.
