e46 3.0 M54 - Ripe for converting ?

alright good peoples,


Im thinking of getting my beemer done - its a 3.0 M54 2001 coup with 135k.

Ive been quoted £1200 quid to have a brc system fitted. Living in kent the choice (and prices !!) are rather limited

I used to have a old dream 21 system to my old merc and was happy with it.


Does the M54 convert well and anything I should know ??

Any idea what the biggest donut tank you can fit in the spare wheel well - its currently got a 17" wheel with a 235 tyre in it !!! Im not bothered about the floor being flush but its got to be a donut as i often have the seats down

Decent price and decent system, don't know who the installer would be (or if installer is the one mentioned on your other thread) but if they're good at the job it would seem a good deal.

M54's convert well provided spuds (gas inlets in inlet manifold) are fitted near enough the inlet valves and system has been calibrated precisely, it helps to use decent injectors (no probs with BRC injectors).

If we knew the profile of the 17" 235 tyre we could calculate it's diameter and advise tanks that would fit on that basis. Without the tyre profile or wheel well measurements we can only go on records of previous conversions... and in my case records of previous 3 series conversions are on my old computer (not this one!). But I think a tank of around 60 litres will fit and keep the boot floor flat, meaning a taller tank with greater capacity might be possible.

Unlikely you'll travel from Kent for me to do your conversion but I'd charge a similar figure, fit the biggest tank possible or of your choice and could assure you of great results.

It just occurred to me that a very naughty person might be(come) a member of a breakdown service that does 'deliver your vehicle to your destination' type breakdown service, and then purposefully create a problem that emergency man can't diagnose or cure at the roadside, such as a cut in a wire to electronic throttle body in an obscure location :twisted:

Other than that, there are trains for the ride home, or if the missus or a mate can drive could come in 2 vehicles.

Naughty naughty. Funnily enough I have just renewed my breakdown at a cost of 500 quid (3 vans 2 cars). Also I have spare key with a dead transponder chip ;)

My car is going in next week as I have a recurring cat eml so will be in touch once that's sorted.

The RAC took a car from Belfast to Brighton for me that way... unfortunately it wasn't a sneakily cut wire, the entire valve head had broken off and fallen into the combustion chamber, and a friend had a brand new (ex-university display model) Alfa twin cam engine in Brighton, and a fully equipped workshop. So I towed it to a suitable place in Belfast (Lotus 7 replica) and "broke down".
They didn't even ask to see the tickets when I said my destination was Brighton!

No probs. I have a BMW728 coming in for conversion in a couple of days, which will run on LPG equally as well as your 3 series would if I converted it ;-)

a bit of a update.

my car has been in for some work, major service and had my emls looked at. I was expecting my emls to be caused by air leaks but garage couldnt find any and recommended a change of maf. which ive done and now eml free for the first time in 9 months !

But they have discovered that my car is suffering from the dreaded E46 cracking boot floor / subframe mount problems, so will need to get that sorted first at a cost of 800 quid :( So will have to put the lpg conversion on hold for the time being. probably not good having a weld-a-thon done after the having a whacking great lpg tank fitted in the same area !

Sometimes MAFs get coated in dust from air filters, particularly some none OEM air filters, seems to affect Jap vehicles more than most others.

I think subframe mount problems effect a range of BMWs but I'm not familiar with cracking boot floors.

Anyway, it's good the EML problem is sorted, good luck with the other issues. Best to get welding done before tank is fitted but wouldn't be a big deal to remove a 30 degree toroidal tank.

The BMW728 just arrived, I'll be starting that tomorrow afternoon, I have to make another trip to Birmingham airport tomorrow that I'd forgotten about.
